I just had a 1954 Rolex Perpetual Oyster repaired. Took three weeks to disassemble, clean, and replace parts. Quite a process...!

I have a Rolex watch. “They” recommend you send it to the factory for cleaning and servicing every 5 or 6 years. HA (needless to say I haven’t sent my watch back. My car doesn’t even need that much servicing)!!! It’s $600 for servicing. If it is my shop rate I would think it’s close to 4 hours.

That is absolutely fascinating. Thank you SO much for sharing this.

My childhood friend’s dad was a watchmaker from Belgium. He worked his entire life repairing high-end watches, and I have to imagine it was similar to this. Unreal.

Bump for later. Citizen Blue Angels titanium Skyhawk is about as high as I can go now.

I can absolutely guarantee I’d have some little parts left over.

It’s way beyond my imagination. Maybe that’s why heavy equipment amuses me.

Nothing worse than doing any repair on anything and having parts leftover. As an IT engineer, it drives me nuts if I have even one screw left over from a server chassis rebuild, even if it’s running without issue.

I’ve got an old Rolex that I bought at an estate sale. Had it for twenty years and never had it serviced, still keeps good time. The crystal is scratched, though. Wonder what a decent job on an OEM crystal replacement and cleaning/refurbishment would cost? $600 plus crystal and labor, maybe $750? Not talking restoration, it’s not in that bad of a shape.

It would be a neat service for Rolex to send a video of your watch being serviced.

Interesting video - amazing that there was no hammers deployed, cursing, or watch pieces thrown about the room.

Fort Worth has a school that trains watchmakers in the Swiss tradition. They say only 6 students out of 100 applicants are accepted.

$895 to repair it. Needed a cleaning, new mainspring, new case tube & crystal. The only reason I spent that much is because it was my father’s. He bought it for $100 at a PX when he was in the Army in 1954.

‘How many $$$?’

You thinking what I’m thinking? Maybe time for a career change? Surely, it can’t take more than a day for ~ $600. I wonder what the training regimen involves and at what cost?
