Was he in Georgia, do you mind me asking? My dad was also saved from near certain death by the A-bomb...

No, he was in Pennsylvania doing classroom stuff. He hadn't even got to flight school. But, if the war had stretched deep into 1946 . . . .

The A Bomb sure saved a lot of lives. I hate to think about the bloodbath if we'd had to invade the Japanese mainland.

In August '45 my dad had returned from Europe with the 20th Armored Division, was on a 30-day furlough, and then was to ship out for the Pacific. The 20th was scheduled to be in the first wave of the invasion of Tokyo Bay in March '46, and 100% casualties were expected.

Sergeant Lafayette Pool, the biggest tanker ace of WWII

Was he under Patton's command?

Pool was in the 3rd Armored Division, which I believe was under First Army command.

By this time, however, Pool had suffered his wound and was back in the States. He compiled those incredible numbers without participating in the Bulge or the invasion of Germany.
