We were at The Eiffel Tower in April and it was crawling with heavily armed soldiers.
Lighten up Francis.
...then everyone’s happy!
Yes. Undoubtedly.
Evidently, the French didn’t learn from the wars of religion of the past and are going to relive them
What can I say but, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPBAIVK-JRA
It’s just that I am not going to just blithely affect an “I am Charlie.”
The most enraged Catholics and Protestants were models of civility compared to this.
Paris is safer today than ever before in history. Just like roaches, the islamos have fled the spotlight on them.
Bring us all up to speed, please.
Dien Bien Phu the strategy was worse than bad,yet the man and a few women gave all and more!

On the French side the 4306 replacements parachuted in between March 14 and May 6 did not make up for the losses suffered between those dates (1,500 killed and more than 4,000 wounded). Among the replacements were 709 non jump-qualified men who volunteered to fight in Dien Bien Phu after April 20, often jumping at night. Many were Vietnamese who volunteered to join their comrades in the besieged garrison.
Your very first jump; going in HOT, at night!
By 1000 hours the Viet minh completely occupy the Elianes. The French have neither the ammunition nor the reserves to make a counter attack. All the bunkers are packed with wounded. Those who are not wounded are prisoners. Practically the entire sector east of the Nam Yum is in the hands of the Viets. General Cogny sends a final message to General de Castries expressing the desire that there be no surrender, no white flag. “ The firing has to die of its own. You mustnt mess up what you have done,” he says.
A. French Army (all services)
1,726 KIA (from Nov. 20, 1953 to May 7, 1954)
1,694 MIA (for the most part, taken prisoner between Nov. 20, 1953 and May 7, 1954)
1,161 Deserters 5,234 WIA (beginning on Nov. 20, 1953)
Of the remaining 10,863 prisoners, including 3,578 wounded, the Viet Minh returned only 3,290 four months later. The number of men who died in the camps, 7,573, represents a percentage on the order of 70%.
The French General Staff never learned the exact number of Viet Minh losses at Dien Bien Phu. They can reasonably be estimated to number: 8,000 KIA (some works estimate 12,000 KIA and 20 to 30,000 WIA) 15,000 to 20,000 WIA of whom a great number certainly must have died from the results of poor medical care. These are not official figures but rather estimates by the French General Staff.
A few minutes later, de Castries’ radio operator methodically smashed his set with the butt of his Colt .45 pistol. Thus the last word to come out of the main fortress, as it was being overrun, came at 5:50 p.m. from the radio operator of the 31st Combat Engineer Battalion, using his code name: “This is Yankee Metro. We’re blowing up everything around here. Au revoir.”
Men of Honor.
As you said, they should go read a book. And I'd suggest that they start with one about the WWI Battle of Verdun.
Don’t kid yourself. The US hasn’t had a more willing partner in the fight against terrorism than France. I’ve been in Paris when the military has been brought in to perform security duties - they are some pretty serious dudes...
Agree. The French are characterized as surrender monkeys, but they aren’t.
WWI shattered France. Same folks that just got home from the last bloodbath were asked to deal with Germany yet again on their own soil. They weren’t up to it at the time.
Come on, those guys are just for show to calm the people. IMHO there is little risk of further attacks of a type requiring instantaneous machine pistol response. Walking around crowds of innocent people with a loaded weapon and chambered round is asking fo an accident.
