An accountant at a New York ad firm leaped to his death because he was hallucinating that the mannequins at his Manhattan office were chasing him, it was claimed today. David Caquais, 43, opened at window at Catch NY on the fourth floor of a building in Manhattan's Garment District and jumped out about 9pm on January 2. The New York Post reports that Mr Caquais screamed 'They're after me! They're after me!' as he ran around his office and attempted to kick out windows.

The Inventor of the Bagpipe

His name was Cyrus Reedy,
And he’d been sent to Hell.
But Cyrus was a jolly sort,
And he just said, “Oh, well!”

“What’s there for entertainment, then?
Ha’e ye perhaps, a band?”
And he paid no attention to,
His shrill demon’s command.

He’d had a wife, he had, he had,
And she was wont to screech,
So by the time ‘e got to Hell,
His ears were out of reach.

The demon’s yells just made him laugh,
Until it lost its voice,
So Cyrus moved about with ease,
And roamed to suit his choice.

He found some stuff discarded round,
It gave the place its flavor,
But he was desperate for a sound,
That only he could savor.

He made up a contraption,
That made an awful wail,
The demons shunned him for the way,
Their ears he did assail.

He added bits and pieces,
The monster thing did grow,
And when he made the sound come out,
They said he had to go.

The threw him out of Hell, they did,
They couldn’t stand the noise,
And that’s why bagpipe music,
Is the kind that he enjoys.

It looks.. interesting.. ;-)

If we didn't have this glowbull warming trend the Statue of Liberty would be buried in snow with only the torch showing...

Since I sent that out (#1204) they canceled the 'winter storm watch' and went to a 'winter storm warning' and bumped the snow 'minimum' up to 18 inches.

Now they have canceled the 'winter storm warning' and in its place we have...

Blizzard Warning

Blizzard Warning in effect from 1:00 PM EST until Wednesday, 12:00 AM EST. Source: U.S. National Weather Service

...BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM MONDAY TO
MIDNIGHT EST TUESDAY NIGHT...

* LOCATIONS...WESTERN PASSAIC COUNTY IN NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY...
AND ORANGE COUNTY NEW YORK.

* HAZARD TYPES...HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW...WITH BLIZZARD
CONDITIONS.

* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 18 TO 24 INCHES. SNOWFALL
RATES OF 2 TO 4 INCHES PER HOUR EXPECTED LATE MONDAY NIGHT INTO
TUESDAY MORNING.

* WINDS...NORTH 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH.

* VISIBILITIES...ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES.

* TEMPERATURES...MID TEENS TO LOWER 20S.

* TIMING...LIGHT SNOW WILL BEGIN MONDAY MORNING...WITH
ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES POSSIBLE BY THE EVENING RUSH.
SNOW WILL PICK UP IN INTENSITY MONDAY EVENING...WITH THE
HEAVIEST SNOW AND STRONGEST WINDS FROM ABOUT MIDNIGHT MONDAY
NIGHT INTO TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

The earlier version of this blizzard warning phrased it "a crippling and potentially historic blizzard will impact the area."

NOAA is staying with the 18-24 inches but some local meteorologists are now saying snow up to 30 inches accumulation. I guess that would classify as 'potentially historic'..

It's going to be fun. Worst case scenario here is loosing power (no furnace then...) And the oven is electric igniter which you can't bypass with one of those campfire long-snout butane lighters. We can light the stovetop burners but not the oven. The propane space heater we have that Mrs. NoC uses to keep herself sortof warm is only 10000 BTU - it will maybe keep the kitchen warm combined with the stove burners but no additional heat from the furnace. If necessary I can bring in my two burner camping stove we use at the Creation Festival. It has a 60,000 and a 30,000 BTU burner. Of course running that will deplete the two full tanks of propane we have rather quickly. It goes through a tank in three and a half days of normal mealtime use out in the wilds of PA. Hopefully all the weak trees that would fall on the power lines were culled by Sandy a couple of years back..

So now we just sit tight and see what happens. We've got the milk, bread, and toilet paper.. ;-)

how did I come to this thread so late?

We can't answer that for sure other than to note that if you had invoked the "Bizarre and Non-Mundane" option in your search criteria, you would have stumbled upon us much sooner... ;-)

Someone also suggested that joining SETI will ferret us out from all the background noise...

“Late” implies that you’ve surrendered to the tyranny of sequentiality. It’s all downhill from there.

SNOW ALERT

snowing like a +##**}
In NJ.
It wasn’t supposed to start until 3pm. It went from a few flakes an hour ago to falling so quickly it’s about an inch now and coming down faster.

At this rate we will hit blizzard shortly.

I’m an optimist but me thinks this one will be epic.

Sparkle now thinks whenever I wake up during the night, I need to spend 15 minutes grooming her. HAH!!! If I don’t comply, she literally throws herself down on the bed so that she hits me when she lands. She’s funny!!!

She is still jumpy and skittish, but she will mellow out in time. I sometimes get impatient for that to happen, but I know she needs to do it in her own time.

I do recall that statement.

Fortunately, my commute is only by subway. I should be OK today but tomorrow may be an issue.
