Those sound like African-American names but I know that can’t be true.

I have watched enough TV and seen enough movies to know that criminals are always White.

Sticking up a gun store? There were no brains in the operation.

Four Missouri men who allegedly instigated the deadly robbery Friday of a Shawnee gun shop now face first-degree murder charges, Johnson County records show.

Prosecutors filed the charges Sunday against Nicquan K. Midgyett, 19, Hakeem W. Malik, 18, Londro E. Patterson, 19, and De’Anthony A. Wiley, 19.

All four are being held in lieu of $500,000 bonds. Patterson turns 20 on Tuesday, and Wiley turns 20 later this month.

Midgyett lives in Raytown. Malik, Patterson and Wiley are from Kansas City.

The men allegedly attempted to rob the She’s A Pistol store in downtown Shawnee about 2:10 p.m. Friday but ended up in a gun battle with one or both of the owners.

Police have not released information on how the gunfight unfolded, but three of the robbers and one store owner suffered bullet wounds.

Co-owner Jon Bieker, 44, died after being taken to a hospital. His wife, Becky Bieker, was kept overnight in the hospital after being punched or hit in the face during the crime. They had opened the five-year-old store months after getting married.

Police arrested two wounded suspects in the store, which is in a strip center at 5725 Nieman Road.

Officers tracked the other two suspects, who shed some of their clothes as they fled, to a house more than a block away. As officers closed in, the homeowner heard the men on her porch and dialed 911.

Two of the suspects previously have been accused of weapons-related crimes in Kansas City.

Patterson pleaded guilty in September in Jackson County to unlawful use of a weapon.

According to court documents, Kansas City police officers saw him and two other young men in April walking in the middle of the street instead of on the sidewalks near 60th Terrace and Jackson Avenue. The officers stopped them and discovered all three were carrying loaded, concealed handguns. The men told police they had the guns for protection.

After Patterson pleaded guilty, a Jackson County judge placed him on three years of probation and ordered him to complete 40 hours of community service. The defendant was forbidden to own or possess weapons, and he had to forfeit to police the .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun he had been carrying when stopped. He also was ordered to complete any drug or alcohol treatment program ordered by his probation officer.

Because of the Shawnee robbery, a Jackson County judge likely will revoke his probation, which means he would have to serve three years in a Missouri prison in the weapons case.

Midgyett currently faces two charges in Jackson County.

According to court records, he got into a domestic argument in September near 12th Street and Woodland Avenue. Police were called after a woman complained that he was holding their 8-month-old son in a car at gunpoint.

When officers arrived, only Midgyett remained in the car. Police found a .40-caliber pistol tucked between the front passenger seat and center console. As officers put the teen into a police car, he allegedly became belligerent and spit on one officer, the records said.

Prosecutors charged him with unlawful use of a weapon and assault/attempted assault on a law enforcement officer. The case is pending.

Malik, who is being held in the Johnson County Jail in Olathe, pleaded guilty in October in Platte County to speeding and failing to register a motor vehicle.

When crime statistics are normalized for demographic differences of income and education, black males are 13 to 16 times more likely to commit a crime where the victim is injured.
