The L'Enfant Plaza Metro station has been evacuated due to smoke in the station.

Metro says trains are bypassing the station and the station has been temporarily closed.

Metro says the source of the smoke has not been determined and it has activated tunnel fans to ventilate the area.

That’s some serious smoke in that photo. When I saw the headline, I thought it was just going to be one of those “trash fires” along the tracks that they used to have in NYC all the time when the homeless were living in the tunnels.

The D.C. Firefighters Association declared the smoke a “mass casualty incident” in a tweet, and said that “multiple rescues [are] being effected.”

Shots of the scene showed numerous emergency vehicles idling outside the complex of office buildings that make up L’Enfant Plaza.

Perhaps they can dose it with some additional dollars from the proposed increase in the gasoline tax.

Very important that we assure the public that THIS IS NOT TERRORISM before we have any idea what’s going on.

A ‘terrorism preparedness’ drill maybe?

One more...

From an eyewitness on Facebook:

Was on that train that just had left Gallery Place. Metro left us breathing black smoke for more than an hour. We finally left through a filthy pitch black tunnel. They have NO ABILITY TO DEAL WITH LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCIES. Thick smoke in the train. People choking. People passed out. Had to be carried out. It is absolutely ridiculous that they could not move our train to L'Enfant. I seriously thought we might not make it.

"Andrew Ames, spokesman for the FBI’s Washington Field Office,.....said the FBI responded to the incident. He said it is standard protocol to respond. “At this point it doesn’t appear to be anything other than a fire.”"

and as we know fires start by themselves almost as often as guns decide to kill people...

I just saw a raw video of this, horrific. People were gagging and choking while laying on the floor. There is one person dead, several in critical condition and numerous others transported. Can not believe this is not breaking on news channels.

Well, there is a football game in the breaking news area here. Bears against the Lyons or something.

One person died.

Many others hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.

Well, this thread is in Breaking News too. Although I would agree with anyone that says the usefulness of FR as a Breaking News site has plummeted in recent years, mostly due to heavy-handed side bar moderation. I see articles on "Breaking News" that are weeks or even months old. Even Breitbart News is more timely, and articles there require that someone actually write them (they aren't simple excerpts and links to other sites).

Over seventy five people hospitalized. The obvious lack of information and news on this is concerning.

Driving home just across the river and the French name was my first thought when I heard the news.

Seems like the moderators leave stories there as long as people are still commenting on them. It definitely detracts from the “Breaking News” sidebar category as an actual source of breaking news!
