[Six+ years old story] Europe plunged into energy crisis as Russia cuts off gas supply via Ukraine
Daily Mail ^ | circa 2009 or before | Robert Lea

Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

This morning, gas companies in Ukraine said that Russia had completely cut off their supply.

Six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas shipped via Ukraine today, in a sharp escalation of a struggle over energy that threatens Europe as winter sets in.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine.

Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas for only 'for a few days' and was in a 'crisis situation'.

Just broke within the hour. Europe waking up to it's worst nightmare??? No mention of this on Bloomberg, yet, but they are showing rising gas prices.

This would be in line with what Russia said this morning/yesterday about moving gas deliveries to Europe that currently transit Ukraine via Turkey. And that Europe will have to build there own pipeline to it.

Supplies to Northern Europe still seem to be flowing via the "Nord" Stream, and through Poland, so it's Central and Southern Europe that will take the hit.

I’m thinking Winter didn’t just settle in over there. It’s been settling in for several months now.

Bet they wish they’d started fracking five years ago.

“Winter didn’t just settle in over there. It’s been settling in for several months now.”

This happens just as the UK is having it’s coldest night in a century...
Gotta admire the timing.

I’m thinking Russia was getting some income from that gas. Seems like a cut off your nose to spite your face move. If this just affected the Ukraine, then I could see some rationality. Screwing Europe isn’t going to buy the guy any points.

You ever watch a guy self-destruct? Sometimes you have to just scratch your head as they do things that are going to wind up being every worse for themselves.

I wonder what Putin will do next to spur (strike that), tank his economy.

Sounds like the Czechs are in a real panic:

“Without prior warning and in clear contradiction with the reassurances given by the highest Russian and Ukrainian authorities to the European Union, gas supplies to some EU member states have been substantially cut,” the EU said in a statement.

“The Czech EU Presidency and the European Commission demand that gas supplies be restored immediately to the EU and that the two parties resume negotiations at once with a view to a definitive settlement of their bilateral commercial dispute,” the presidency and the Commission said in a joint statement.

Nothing but the timing....
While many of us thought this would happen months ago, Putin had the patience to wait until Europe was deep in the cold to do it.

Deciding when to shoot yourself in the head to impress people generally isn’t something to admire.

Russia needs the income. This guy is a absolute blithering idiot.

Necessity is the mother of invention as Europe develops alternative sources and means of energy.

I doubt Europe will be in a rush to build a pipeline to a gangster madman as if that is a solution.

This does explain the Russian statements of the last few days, warning about gas supplies via Ukraine, and the yesterday’s currency moves.

It also explains why Euro gas prices spiked so hard yesterday.

Thanks F15Eagle. Sadly, this is exactly what was predicted when Europe decide to take the bait, Russia’s gas. I wonder what the populace thought about this all along.

Could be they were against it as much as we are against illegal immigration, only they couldn’t do anything about that either.

Now the guy on the street will take it in the shorts. Interesting how it always turns out that way.
