April DeBoer never intended to be a legal pioneer, much less a public face of perhaps the most significant civil rights challenge to reach the Supreme Court in years. She and her partner just wanted to be able to adopt children as a couple.
But when their lawsuit challenging Michigans adoption code came to a federal district court in 2012, the judge shocked DeBoer and her partner, Jayne Rowse, telling them they should instead be contesting the states same-sex marriage ban. After much anguished discussion, the couple agreed, DeBoer recounted.
By no means did we set out to be trailblazers, said DeBoer, a nurse who along with Rowse has cared for numerous foster children with special needs. Taking on the marriage ban seemed like a huge battle, and it still is, but the ban isnt right. It harms families like ours, so we decided we needed to do it.
On Friday, DeBoer, Rowse and same-sex couples from three other states succeeded in putting the issue of marriage equality before the Supreme Court, which accepted their cases and will consider this spring whether the Constitution requires that same-sex couples be allowed to marry.

In Michigan, DeBoer, 43 and Rowse, 50, also feel as though theyve become a part of history. They had sued in 2012 only to challenge the states adoption code, which prevented them from adopting the special-needs children they had cared for as a couple.
DeBoer and Rowse, who have been dating for about 12 years, are licensed foster parents and have adopted two children each. When they tried to get their wills and other affairs in order, the pair learned that under Michigan law, if one of them died, the other wouldnt necessarily get the others children.

I’d rather push for legal recognition of unicorn than for legal recognition of gay “marriage”. Neither one will be real, even with legal recognition, but at least unicorns are cute.
Lesbians.
Not like in the movies.
Faces that could launch a thousand ships... straight to the bottom.
Gay marriage? How about water buffalo marriage ....
God awful ugly, they deserve one another.

What a lovely couple. (/sarcasm)
I have said it before and I’ll say it again: There is nothing “Gay” about marriage.
It’s good they don’t breed.
What I don’t understand is, why does a lesbian, that I guess should be attracted to a female persona would be attracted to someone who takes on the persona of a male? I have noticed that very often, both lesbians try to take on the characteristics of a man, and a man, you would think is a turn off to both. I don,t get it.
Agreed. I don’t get it either.
Right - not attracted to men, supposedly, but are attracted to women who look like men. They can’t be husband and wife, but want to be “married.” They can’t be a mother and father, but want to be “parents.” It makes no sense all around.
They are SELFISH. No one in their right mind would put an innocent child into that situation.
