During Robert E. Lee's 100th birthday in 1907, Charles Francis Adams, Jr., a former Union Commander and grandson of US President John Quincy Adams, spoke in tribute to Robert E. Lee at Washington and Lee College's Lee Chapel in Lexington, Virginia. His speech was printed in both Northern and Southern newspapers and is said to had lifted Lee to a renewed respect among the American people.

At Appomattox Longstreet suggested to General Lee that they could avoid surrender and encirclement by dispersing their army to fight a guerrilla war that the North would be hard pressed to win. Lee made the decision to surrender the army and begin the healing of the US as enough death and destruction had been dealt. The ramifications of his decision were enormous. Even the US had been born out of a semi guerrilla war during the Revolution. Even today, Lee is considered one of the most revered US military men in history.

I am just curious, how many Southern men were convicted of treason? Why not? The answer would shut up those that called Southerners treasonous. Samuel Chase knew he could not win a case of treason against Alfred Bledsoe in a court of law.

The shelling of a military target that happens to have civilians co located is not a war crime. Had Pemberton thrown in the towel earlier, the siege and subsequent shelling would have not been required.

Right on. My Dad’s ancestors rode with McNeil’s raiders and captured General Crook. I have the Whitney Dragoon revolver which was supposedly General Crook’s sidearm and has been handed down through our family.

The code of chivalry included going to your sworn liege and telling him that you could not hold to your oath any longer and asking for release.

Lincoln could have ordered the Southern military arrested in the early days.

May this post not be infected by petty vitriolic remarks and may even old, backward, redneck rebels like myself raise a toast to our beloved Federal government and to that has become of America since Appomatox.

Call Mr. GG2 back when you have a 21 passenger plane at 200 ft off the end of the airstrip and the right engine hand grenades. That’s when you hear a little girl screaming and realize its you. :-) What about that soaring invite. 1000 mile non stop cross country. Interested? Nah.

when it comes down to your oath, what do you choose? Your honor or ?????

Lee described himself as not wanting to make war on his neighbors. It's also significant how important it was, in those times before the nationalization of everything, that your first loyalty was to your State. After all, the union itself is an arrangement constructed by the States–not the other way around.

Honor is at issue either way, which is why in charity we have to grant to Lee that the decision was legitimately difficult. It's impossible to read a biography of him, long or short, and conclude that honor wasn't important to him, or that he wasn't a man of virtue. That's probably why he was revered throughout the world after the war.
