half-decade after killing off its hefty catalog to focus on the Web, J.C. Penney Co. is bringing it back, armed with data showing that many of its online sales came from shoppers inspired by what they saw in print.
The new, 120-page book will feature items from Penney's home department and will be sent to select customers in March, the first time the struggling department store chain has sent out a catalog since 2010.
The move highlights an oddity of the digital age. While shoppers are increasingly buying everything from shoes to sofas to cars over the Internet, they still like browsing through the decidedly low-tech artifacts of page and ink.
Catalog mailings are down considerably from 2007, when they peaked at 19.6 billion, according to the Direct Marketing Association. But in a sign the decline may have bottomed out, mailings grew in 2013 for the first time in six years to 11.9 billion.
The call to bring back the catalog was made by Chief Executive Myron "Mike" Ullman, who is trying to return the retailer to health after a disastrous overhaul under former Apple Inc. executive Ron Johnson.
It also was Mr. Ullman who decided during his first turn as Penney's chief to stop publishing it....

They used to have a good bra section back when I was in grade school.
Is it going to come in 2-ply???
I can remember when they sold firearms including military surplus.
A totally different company now.
All the JC Pennys around us in Huntsville are selling last years stuff at a discount. Got a great deal on a cold weather coat there last year. :)
Good. Catalogs are useful.
I use old Cabela’s catalog pages to line the cooktop
when I’m going to be doing enthusiastic frying.
Still love looking through the LLBean catalogue. Guess I’m old school!
I believe the big change began around 1970 give or take. By the late 70s it was basically a clothing store, mostly women’s clothing too.
They used to have an automotive department: Tires, batteries, shocks, radios etc................
That there catalog will come in real handy..................
J.C. Penney is resurrecting its catalog

Awesome! I’ll be needing a new typewriter soon. And one of them big screen RCA 19 inch TV sets. I hear they even have remote controls with them. And maybe an 8-track player for my AMC Pacer.
~sheesh~
Suspect they will now have a gay section.
I wonder how many gays and trannies will be featured.
Stack a whole bunch of catalogs up, perhaps 18 inches high, then place them horizontally in a long box and they make a good bullet trap for up to 22 magnum rounds. I had one in my garage until I built a fancy one with rubber mulch.
psssst. don’t tell them about the internet. It’s a secret.
bump
I caught a bit of commentary on Fox Business last night about how Wall Street moguls got their hands on JC Penneys and Sears and drove them down to what they are now, because they did NOT know the catalog and store business. the expert said that Penney’s now out from under the Wall Street mogul and may have a chance to come back. No comment on Sears, but I took his comment about Penney’s that if applied to Sears it might be resurrected as well.
Or hardwood flooring, phone poles and cinder blocks.
