New Delhi: US President Barack Obama, who has often talked about the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on his life, on Sunday paid homage to the 'apostle of peace' at Rajghat soon after his arrival on a three-day visit.

Obama placed a wreath at Gandhi's memorial and bowed before the Samadhi with folded hands. He went straight to Rajghat from the ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. During his last visit in 2012 too, he had paid tributes to Gandhi at the memorial.

The American President was presented a replica of Gandhi's famous 'charkha' by the officials of the memorial. Obama also planted a sapling of Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) at the Rajghat and wrote on the visitor's book.

**on Sunday paid homage to the ‘apostle of peace’**

OK, politically speaking, he used pacifism as a tool.

“Pacifism should not be used to justify ones own cowardnice. To be a Pacifist is honorable, to be a coward and claim to be a pacifist, is despicable.” ——Mohatmi Ghandi.

He used non-violence...not pacifism. The British refused to leave India on the pretext that they were benign, and morally superior. Mahatma Gandhi used non-violence to show them otherwise.

Gandhi also had contempt for Christians in general. There is a phrase in particular where he said that Christians were anti-Christ.
