Actually, there is. China has been outsourcing to South America. Foxconn was so overloaded that some iDevice production is being carried out in Brazil.

The Apple folks are more concerned with the merits of Apple’s TECHNOLOGY ( as opposed to say, Microsoft’s ).

I seldom see them talk about suppliers and such issues.

Child labor is expensive and so are those suicide nets....

PLEASE demonstrate the child labor. . . beyond rumors. There are 750,000 workers at FoxConn factories and the total number of underage workers found on an audit was 12. . . and they had used fake IDs, usually borrowed from other family members, to get work. The suicide rate among FoxConn's workforce at all their plants was 1/4 that of the Chinese population in general. . . and 1/8 that of the same age cohort of 18 to 28 year old young people in the Chines population. . . and 1/2 of that among similar aged AMERICAN young people enrolled in Ivy League Universities. This suicide idiocy is exactly that. IDIOCY. FoxConn had exactly 18 suicides among their 750,000 workers in 18 months. That works out to ONE per MONTH in those 18 months among 750,000 workers spread over 22 factories. Do you know what a propaganda campaign is? You fell for it. . . and you KEEP falling for it and keep spreading it. FUD.

Working at Foxconn is liking working at the circus.
You just have to make sure to land in the net.

“I am reminded of a Twilight Zone where a boss relishes in others becoming obsolete and finds himself out of a job in the end. The show with the raised podium.”

Starring Burgess Meredith as a gentle, but internally tough, librarian — books being obsolete, Meredith had to go, but he wound up taking the tyrant with him. I saw it for the first time a few months ago. For those who remember Meredith only as the Penguin, it showed a completely different side of him.

Do-it-yourself projects and repairs are more fun than ever.

Among the components I took apart were a bunch of hard drives. Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital - Foxconn name on circuit boards and parts. Maybe people should boycott Seagate etc. (No where in the article was it mentioned what factories were involved or who the components were manufactured for - the "Apple" in their title was made up out of thin air.) As for the drives, the shiny spinner platters go to a daughter for jewelry and toy making. She makes mobiles and other toys from them. The rare earth magnets inside drives are huge and powerful, making for fun projects.

Sure, there are parts bearing the Foxconn name. That doesn’t mean that all competition should give up. The more, the merrier. And in the near future, because of what’s happening now, markets will be more merry, less centralized and more distributed than ever. There are antecedents and consequences, actions and reactions. It’s the way of things.
