These guys are UMC members of the "social-social" set who desperately want to climb up into the "A" list. They play suckup constantly, and when they get to the "A" list they become.... Well, tyrannical to others they deem "beneath" them, especially those of us "below the salt" (literally, at an "A" - list Victorian dinner party, where people were seated strictly according to protocol) and ostentatiously solicitous of "outgroups", to rebuke, provoke, and demean you . They despise you and everything you are, everything you aspire to, everything you value. You are dirt.

That all straightened out, the suckups show off for the "A" - listers by Doing Good Works, of which epater les bourgeoises is an upper-class favorite. (See Paul Fussel, Class, which laboratory-slices American Society, and society generally, and describes them.)

Before the Civil War, for example, "plantation liberals" would have celebrated a barn-raising for some LMC farmer type by sending around a coffle of black slaves to swing hammers side-by-side with free white men, to insult and degrade the latter by physically and socially equating them up on the beneficiary's barn roof. It was The Man's way of degrading other people to "increase social distance" between himself and the common run of humanity. It begat violence and hatred in the South, where the society was already dual (black and white), when planter types, showing off their "planter liberalism", degraded and demeaned their "cracker" neighbors in this and other ways.
