Walker Squirms on Immigration
National Review Online ^ | February 1, 2015 | Nick Tell

Scott Walker is decidedly not for amnesty for undocumented immigrants. But what immigration policy is he for?

The Wisconsin governor, fresh off a speech at the Iowa Freedom Summit that earned rave reviews, and currently enjoying a popularity surge — he’s just pulled ahead of the Republican presidential pack in Iowa for the first time — stopped by ABC’s This Week earlier today for an interview with Martha Raddatz.

After grilling Walker on foreign policy and getting him to say he wouldn’t rule out sending ground troops to Syria, Raddatz shifted the conversation to immigration. Stipulating that Walker supported securing the southern border and fixing the nation’s immigration system, Raddatz began this portion of her interview by asking Walker point-blank, “what would you do about the 11 million undocumented who are still here?”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t the GOP been equally culpable in this mess?”

Yes, they could have done what they said they would do after the last amnesty, secure the border and enforce existing law. Again from Senator Dirksen forty or so years ago “Republicans and Democrats have the same goals, just a different path in achieving them.” I don’t normally capitalize “democrats” but I’m sure the Senator would have.

Or, how about if we simply enforced the laws we already have?

(Though I’d take away anchor babies, the immigration lottery, etc.)

Yep. The GOPe is pushing hard to make him the supposed “tea party/conservative” alternative to their choice of Jeb—whom they’re not sure can win against unified support for an actually conservative candidate.

Not even Pence would deport every illegal that LEO encounters. And he would not imprison those who hire them.

"Just how are we to nominate anyone?"

We can't. Everyone in the Republican Party is a GOPe RINO, except my guy. And I'll vote so that Hillary is elected, unless my guy is nominated. /s

He’s got that standard GOP position:

Not for amnesty
Not for deportation
Please move to next subject
Need laws that work
Need to enforce the law
We cant ignore those who are here
Please move to next subject

Who’s going to be the first to come out for deportation (specifically and unequivocally) ?

"Everyone knows it is not possible to deport 11 million people.

"Well, it is possible, if you operated your country like you were Hitler or Stalin, but it is not very possible here".

That a ridiculous assertion.

Mass deportation compared to Genocide?

How about cutting illegals off from every aspect of civil life...employment, medical care, education, entitlements, auto ownership and licensing etc.?

Then, deport every single one of them encountered by LEO for any reason?

Yes, it is possible.

You start with number one, then you move to number two, then on to three, then four, then five, and so on...

And in so doing you show that if you come here, you might get to stay here a little while, but we will eventually arrive at your number, and you will be sent home.

At the same time, they no longer qualify for welfare or health care of any sort, their children will not be anchor babies, they will not get driver’s licenses, and identity theft will be prosecuted.

That’s when many of them start going home on their own, and more stop showing up, because we have shown that we are not going to tolerate being invaded any longer.

this is a country-changing event.

it is hardly a mere minor policy issue.

he needs to be right on it.

I haven’t dived into the weeds on it, but my understanding is that he favors sealing the border.

The problem comes with what he wants to “do about” those who are already inside that border.

yes, he holds the Chamber of Commerce position on this.

people should not get amnesty or citizenship merely because they want to work here. lots of americans want to work here too and are being passed over for h1b folks. companies put’together skill requirements almost no one has, then get an h1b person that does not have all of the requirements - shhhh!!! - then they may or may not then adjust the skills needed, and gets a cheaper worker.

yes. this is the only issue so far that he is truly seriously flawed on.

which is why he needs to get right on it to be the conservative candidate.

basically you’ve just described the way mexico handles their illegal immigrant problem.

in this one aspect i would welcome the us adopting the laws of mexico concerning illegal immigrants.

RE :”Everyone knows it is not possible to deport 11 million people”

Could we at least deport the ones who march and protest demanding amnesty?

How about the ones on TV demanding amnesty?

Many states like CA and Maryland are issuing them drivers licenses that identify them.

again he hs the chamber of commerce view on this.

essentially citizenship for those who want to work here.

to me just wanting to work here, don’t cut it to giving them citizenship. you don’t get that just because you want to work here.

Yours is the first practical proposal of the replies I’ve received.

It would take you a long time to get to number 11,000,000, but you at least understand that progress must be gradual.

Well, it is possible, if you operated your country like you were Hitler or Stalin, but it is not very possible here.

Please explain what is so Hitlerite or Stalinist about a bus or a plane ride back to their own country.

Agree. It’s called enforce the (existing) immigration laws and stop the magnet.

Unfortunately, neither party seems at all interested in doing this...the RIGHT thing. It’s pretty basic, actually.
