Here's something that many Americans -- including some of the smartest and most educated among us -- don't know: The official unemployment rate, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor, is extremely misleading. Right now, we're hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is "down" to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market. None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job -- if you are so hopelessly out of work that you've stopped looking over the past four weeks -- the Department of Labor doesn't count you as unemployed. That's right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news -- currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren't throwing parties to toast "falling" unemployment.

No worries, it will “self correct” back to 18% (more like +25%) as soon as a Republican is back in office.
You can bet your last dollar that the moment a Republican President takes office, the Department of Labor will damn well count you as unemployed.
People who collect unemployment compensation must certify periodically that they are actively searching for work, whether they are or not. If you don’t tell the lie, you don’t get your check. Needless to say, almost everybody tells the government what they want to hear.
As soon as unemployment runs out, there is no longer any requirement to lie in order to get a check, so people just stop lying. At that point, they are counted as having dropped out of the labor force because they have “stopped looking for work”. In reality, the only thing they stopped doing was lying about it.

We have WAY more unemployed people than 30 million. At least 30 PERCENT of the population is unemployed! In other countries, civil wars have started over lower percentages! The only reason we aren’t in a shooting war now is because of the social-welfare/government benefits safety net. Once that safety net breaks? Its all over.
from 1982-2006 you didnt need people to convince you the economy was doing great. Some ups and downs, but it was consistently good the entire time.
Now these freaks have to engage full-time in trying to convince us that this s**t sandwhich is the best economy in decades when any fool can look around them and see it is terrible.

We are very close to reading articles like that.
From that chart, unemployment did start to spike while Bush was still in office, but then it skyrocketed in a near vertical line when Obama was in office. Problem is, I don’t know what the two percentages on either side of the chart represent. There’s always a legend, or the explanation is always on the side of the chart.
