FCC CHAIRMAN: INTERNET TO BE PUBLIC UTILITY
Breitbart ^ | February 4, 2015 | UPI

Posted on 02/04/2015 10:52:32 AM PST by Jim Robinson

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) — The Federal Communications Commission will seek more influence on Internet regulation to ensure net neutrality, its chairman said Wednesday.

In an editorial published on {link:the website of the magazine Wired: “http://www.wired.com/2015/02/fcc-chairman-wheeler-net-neutrality?mbid=social_twitter”,nw}, Tom Wheeler explained new rules, proposed this week, “to preserve the Internet as an open platform for innovation and free expression. This proposal is rooted in long-standing regulatory principles, marketplace experience, and public input.”

The new rules will cast {link:high-speed Internet service as a public utility: “http://www.cnbc.com/id/102376526″,nw}, an unidentified person, who was consulted the FCC {link:on the proposal, told CNN: “http://money.cnn.com/2015/02/02/technology/net-neutrality-fcc/index.html”,nw}. The change would give the FCC more power to regulate arrangements between Internet and content providers, and would change current policy in which Internet providers charge content companies, such as Netflix, for direct access to customers through broadband.

The FCC would have the power to ensure broadband companies do not create “slow lanes” for public internet traffic, a concept known as net neutrality.

Wheeler’s plans are in accordance with President Obama’s statement in November...

Yes, the cable companies were expert at bribing big city Democrat politicians to secure stunningly profitable exclusive territories. And of course progressive media outlets like CNN and MSNBC are owned by cable.

But that is wireless regulation where radio frequencies are a limited commodity. Internet communications do not have frequency allocation issues.

The only thing that broadcast and broadband has in common is the prefix "broad," which I suspect this administration is counting on using to confuse the stupid American public.

There is NO FREE SPEECH on the Internet. There never has been, and there never will be. The various websites and forums are owned by someone, and that “someone” has the legal right, under the US Constitution, to determine what they will and will not allow on their website or forum. I have no idea why you ever thought there was free speech on the Internet.

Yes ... in order to get things done ... like you say ... it does take a certain degree of cooperation.

>>> The day the Internet becomes a public utility regulated by the rectal openings in D.C. is the day I quit using it. <<<

I think that’s the idea.

Can’t have any free thinkers out there. Only fully vetted and indoctrinated site need apply. Users will have to have a government license to connect. Oh, and let’s not forget the new taxes.

Our conversations on the net is our business and the government can do their business by following the Constitution. Only a decadent government devoid of morality has the Gladys Kravitz Syndrome.

I think this change will NOT be accepted unless there are guarantees stated clearly in writing that respects the First Amendment right of free speech.

Oh, okay. I’m sure 0bola is writing up that “guarantee”, as I type.....

Dear Ray,

If you like your Freedom of Speech, you can keep your Freedom of Speech. On the internet and everywhere.

Your trusted friend,
0bola

Yup, but we’re not the government. Like-minded, pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-constitution patriotic citizens are welcome to post here. Others need not apply.

I do realize that about Free Republic, but I just have to laugh when anyone says that they have free speech on the Internet (or ever had it in the past) ... :-) ...

I’m all for private ownership of the various websites and forums on the Internet and for all those owners to determine for themselves what is allowed and what is not.

Currently, anyone can open his own website on the internet and enjoy all the benefits of completely unfettered free speech he wants (within reason). When the feds “regulate” it, you can bet this will change.
