Why Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is surging

Conservatives have hungered for a new Ronald Reagan since 1988. One reason that no Reagan heir has emerged — aside from the obvious fact that Reagan was a rare figure of Rushmore proportions — is that he changed the terms of the debate. No small-government, reform conservative has won the Republican presidential nomination since Reagan in part because a lot of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters, comfortable in the post-Reagan economy, did not feel that further radical reforms were necessary. After six years of Obama trying to build “The Great Society II: Insolvency Boogaloo,” a lot of Republicans feel like the party needs a champion to reform a dysfunctional, corrupt, opressive Washington. There is a sense that it is 1979 all over again. Walker, with victory after victory against the machinery of big government in Wisconsin, speaks to that longing.

snip

Right now, Walker is connecting with Republican voters who want not just to win in 2016, but to send to Washington a fighter who will do to Obamaism what Reagan did to Carterism. Is Walker the man for the job? I don’t know. To paraphrase an old trope about the primary, I haven’t met him even once, much less three times. But there is no denying that today, two days before Valentine’s Day, he is making a lot of Republican hearts flutter.

The absolute best thing Walker has going for him is a record. A record of accomplishment.
his negatives so far are. College dropout and a MSM trying to make something negative out of it.
Second and probably the most damaging is the fact that he has a bald spot in the back.
Oh the horrors.

Walker is no Ronald Reagan, but he may be a great candidate and great president. Only Reagan is Reagan. He was a perfect combination of principle, charisma, and political smarts. He held stedfastly to his core beliefs and used his skills to speak directly to the American people.

Walker is a tremendous governor. He also has the potential to be a tremendous president and take on big issues. Does he have the political skills to get there? That’s the big question. He certainly has demonstrated it on the state level and got off to a great start in Iowa.

My list is as follows in this order:

Cruz
Jindal
Walker
Paul
Perry
Rubio

Christie

Warren
Clinton
Bush

Being in Virginia, my choice is likely going to be slim to none and will just vote for whoever is still left not named Bush.

Only Reagan is Reagan.

You are so correct.

That's a sad statement. The post-Reagan Republican Party has been the family party of the Bushes and their modern version of Rockefeller Republicanism, "Thousand Points of Light Compassionate Conservatism." They most definitely are Liberal on spending issues. And the GOP Congress is way too comfortable doling out the spending when they are in charge. Its why the country is swirling down the toilet.

And that is why I'm voting for someone who as a track record of taking on entitlements and spending. I will be a single issue voter in the GOP primaries -- who will be best at cutting spending and government, period.

I think Walker is the strongest candidate. He has been thoroughly vetted three or four times by the entire liberal machine. Whatever there is to know about him is known and he has won on his policies and record in a blue state three times in four years.

No he

After years of watching Boehner/McConnell/Trent Lott wet noodling the people are standing up and shouting “YESSSSS!!!”

I would like a Walker/Cruz ticket. Walker for his executive experience, and Cruz for his oratory skills.

I drew the same conclusion. That ticket is a guaranteed victory.

I like 3-4 current contenders enough to vote for them. None are perfect. Walker is one of them and, as a governor, has an edge over the others in my estimation.

I would be happy with either Jindal or Walker serving as Cruz’s VP.

Before I can support Walker he has to clearly stand for the rule of law, American sovereignty and the citizens of this country.
Amnesty is the single most important issue we are facing.
Amnesty is national suicide. We either stand on the rule of law or descend into chaos.
We must have a President who WILL enforce the laws on Fraudulently Documented Foreigners or we lose the country.

The writer doesn’t really connect the dots on why there hasn’t been another conservative at the forefront. That’s fine, because that’s not really the point of the article. GWB ran as a conservative of sorts, and his daddy ran as the heir to Reagan. The simple fact is that the base wants limited government, at least some sort of principled stand on social issues, and a coherent foreign policy. That is not what the GOPe wants. The base is not on the same page as the elites. The elites are closer to the Democrats. Reagan was not the rule of the GOP, he was the exception. We badly need another exception, or another party.

Walker is 100% GOPe. The Uniparty needs him.

“Walker is 100% GOPe. The Uniparty needs him”

I am lukewarm on Walker. He’s going to have to show me the money with specifics on every issue before I jump on the bandwagon.

I like Cruz and Jindal a lot, but both have natural born citizen eligibility issues that many of us detested about the Obamanation. Case law indicates that a natural born citizen is a citizen who is born to parents who are also citizens. It would therefore be rather hypocritical of me to support Cruz and Jindal under these circumstances.

If that were the case, Obama wouldn’t be president. I disagree with you, Cruz and Jindal are eligible.
