Wow...the death of a true Icon here in SoCal....
Apropos, given the death of journalism we are seeing now.
RIP Mr. Chambers.
And Larry McCormick on sports and then, I can't even think of his name but he was sports back then and not bad at sports... Keith Olberman worked for KTLA as the sportscaster but in those days, I don't think he was ever political. Of course, I largely despise whatever Olberman said on MSNBC.
I remember when KTLA got a mustachioed news anchor who I guess was pretty famous, I can't think of his name for anything.
Was it the Ron Burgundy guy? Harold something or other?
True. :-)
We didn’t have a TV until a couple years after he went to work for KTLA, getting that TV was a big deal.
Well yeah, you would have missed the OJ chase....
George Putnam was an old timer at KTLA and a stauch conservative.
LOL! OJ was our hero when he played for USC, not so much in later years.
Watched Stan for many, many years in SoCal. He was the most natural TV reporter I ever saw. A true pioneer in his field. RIP
I think he was one of the last true news reporters. No slant. Lived in LA my whole life and remember him well.
RIP
Yes, something like that. Maybe it will come to me.
SoCal ping
Burgundy?
Or maybe Roberts. I can look that up later. Thank you for the answers all.
Unlike Peter Jennings, Stan Chambers actually was shot at while flying in a helicopter during the 1965 Watts Riots. The sporting goods stores were looted and the hunting rifles were fired at the KTLA newscopter. I remember watching live. Stan said something like, “Uh oh. Those flashes down there are muzzle flashes from high powered rifles. We had better get out of here. Reporting live, Stan Chambers.” He covered the the 1992 LA riots as well.
In 1963, when I was a wee lad, the Baldwin Hills dam in Los Angeles developed a crack and was leaking water. Stan Chambers was interviewing an expert from the LA water district. The man said “that dam will never break.” As soon as the words left his mouth the dam broke, live on TV.
I hope somebody puts together a documentary on the life and times of Stan Chambers.
RIP.
Stan was one of us - a man of the people.
I remembered.....Harold Greene. But I think he was on KABC.
Rest in Peace Stan Chambers.
Oh my goodness, icon of so cal broadcast television. RIP, sir.
A life well lived !
