Republicans Seize On HSBC Scandal To Hold Up Loretta Lynch's Confirmation Exclusive: Republicans believe leak ‘throws a monkey wrench’ into Lynch becoming the next attorney general as questions swirl over her role in $1.9bn bank settlement in 2012

Paul Lewis 13 February 2015

Senate Republicans are seizing on the global tax scandal engulfing HSBC to delay the confirmation of Loretta Lynch, Barack Obama’s nominee for attorney general, the Guardian can reveal.

The Republican chairman of the Senate judiciary committee, Chuck Grassley, was on Friday preparing a fresh tranche of questions for Lynch about the huge cache of leaked data showing how HSBC’s subsidiary helped conceal billions of dollars from domestic tax authorities.

HSBC could yet be prosecuted over tax-dodging scheme, warns Loretta Lynch. Obama’s nominee for attorney general negotiated a deal with HSBC two years ago that saw it avoid criminal charges but Lynch says DoJ still has powers to act

Grassley and another Republican senator are planning to investigate whether Lynch could have done more to stand up to the world’s second largest bank. Lynch negotiated a controversial settlement with HSBC in 2012, after the bank admitted to facilitating money-laundering by Mexican drug cartels and helping clients evade US sanctions.

Now there are questions over why she did not also pursue HSBC over evidence that its Swiss arm helped US taxpayers hide their assets.

Who needs to get involved in this? Her own words are self-disqualifying, all on their own, without reference to anything. She needs to be rejected.

So she let them skate two years ago but says, hey they could still be prosecuted by the DOJ, which she will be in charge of if confirmed. Yeah the confidence that charges would be filed by a DOJ headed by her, not so much.

She’s already said enough to qualify her for deportation much less a government post.

They should delay all of his nominations, just stall them out completely.

Not so fun when the tables have turned.

Yeah, but keep in mind they got Al Capone on tax evasion, not his greater sins. Whatever works and whatever sends them behind bars. In her case, knocks her out of an appointment for AG. Next!!

They need to look at the political contributions of the individuals who the bank helped hide assets in assessing why she did not initiate prosecution.

Once More Through the Revolving Door for Justice’s Breuer
By BEN PROTESS MARCH 28, 2013

Mr. Breuer is expected to earn about $4 million in his first year at Covington. In addition to representing clients, he will serve as an ambassador of sorts for the firm as it seeks to grow overseas.

The move is his latest turn through Washington’s revolving door, the symbolic portal connecting government service and private practice. Mr. Breuer, who began his career as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan and later represented President Bill Clinton during his impeachment hearings, is joining Covington for the third time.

During Senate hearings in 2011, Breuer conceded that he had failed to alert other Justice Department officials that federal agents had allowed guns to illegally flow into Mexico and onto U.S. streets between 2006 and 2007. The practice, known as “gun walking,” was also a key part of the Obama administration’s Phoenix gun-tracking operation, “Fast and Furious.”

(snip)

Breuer made a name for himself as special counsel to President Bill Clinton, whom he represented in the 1998 impeachment hearings and the Whitewater investigation.

Before his appointment at the Justice Department, Breuer had worked at the Washington office of the Covington & Burling law firm, alongside Holder. While there, Breuer defended former Clinton national security adviser Samuel R. “Sandy” Berger, who was being investigated for tampering with presidential documents at the National Archives.

Kickbacks, to Lynch, Holder, O’bastard, O’bastard’s 2012 reelection campaign.

There was too much money in this scandal to think they didn’t get paid off.

Ken Star, pick up the white courtesy phone.

Let me see Holder gets $77 mil a year to advise MOrgan $tanley how to remain corrupt and avoid prosecution by the feds.

Is Lying Lynch expected to uphold the law anymore than Hack Holder?

Under this administration?

What the heck is a “tranche”? Looked in my World Book Encyclopedia Dictionary and don’t find it. The Dictionary is 5 inches thick and has room for lots of words but “tranche” isn’t one of them.

Thank you. Must be I am old school and turn to the dictionary instead of Google for definitions. So this is a nice French word that should be replaced with an English one in English writing. Further, its use in this context hardly seems proper.
