An estimated 25,000 people died in the British and American attack, which created a firestorm that left 33 sq km (12 sq miles) of the city in ruins.

Speaking at the city's Church of Our Lady, German President Joachim Gauck said the attack had "burned itself into the memory" of survivors.

The city was believed by Allied forces to be a vital Nazi command centre.

It was used by German forces to defend the country against Soviet forces approaching from the east.

Boo-hoo—Screw with the bull and you get the horn.

Not a single mention of Hitler in the article.

Dresden was a not so subtle warning to the Soviets. It was a way of making sure that they stopped where they said that they would and did not try to “march to the Atlantic”.

Nazis deserved 5 nukes in each Third Reich city.

I’m sick of this stuff. I don’t know how many brits I’ve met who’ve excoriated poor Bomber Harris - one of whom survived the Blitz!!!

Next: The evil of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

When leftys say the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was racist I always mention Dresden (most of them have never been taught about it).

Seems that a lot of Brits were killed by German bombs.

I remember a debate waaaay back in high school; myself and others were on the side that had the position that the civilians who died were innocent bystanders. I remember a girl on the other side saying, “They were just as much an enemy as the Nazis were because they sat silent while the SS death machine was created and grew.

From Instapundit:

"WE SEEM TO LIVE IN A WORLD THAT SAYS OF DRESDEN “NEVER AGAIN,” BUT ISN’T SO SURE ABOUT AUSCHWITZ: The Firebombing Of Dresden, 70 Years Later.

The Nazis opened a can of whoop-ass, and this is one of the things that came out. The world would be a safer place if their modern-day equivalents

Check out Peter Hitchens’s blog at hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk. Hitchens (brother of Christopher) is a so-called “conservative” who’s right on board with the anti-Churchill, anti-Harris crowd.

The firebombing of Dresden was a war crime whose only purpose was to terrorize civilians, as Churchill himself admitted at the time, in a memo putting an end to the practice as “ineffective”.

I was always curious if anyone had seriously wargamed a Soviet turn against its allies. I don’t know how much of a clue Stalin had about the A-bombs, and how much fight was left in the war machine after 20 million dead and the emotional climax of fighting from near Moscow to Berlin. The Soviets were fighting on very long supply routes at that point. I know there was some whisper of worry in the west, and some firebrands like Patton wanting to take the war east, but that’s about it.

“The firebombing of Dresden was a war crime “

There are no crimes in war. Where are the courts, lawyers, and judges?

War is the obliteration of the enemy. If you don’t want to get obliterated then don’t wage war.

Countries do not exist on their own. People are the country. It takes people to go to war. If the people sit on their asses and let their government go to war so they get bombed then tough noogies. That’s war.

Dresden was a not so subtle warning to the Soviets. It was a way of making sure that they stopped where they said that they would and did not try to “march to the Atlantic”.

Interesting theory, because Dresden was both overwhelmingly industrial and civilian, and the firebombing was overwhelmingly brutal and horrific. On the other hand, they blocked Patton when he pushed for invading the USSR, so they wanted the Soviets to exist, but out of Europe. Nice little chess game.

Nothing says total war like fire bombing cities. Dresden, Tokyo... one can argue necessity, but its never something to be pleased about. Some tactical and strategic successes should nevertheless bring tears to the victors, or they lose their humanity while winning the battle.
