Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday took steps to prevent a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security by splitting off legislation attacking President Obamas immigration actions from the funding fight.
McConnells actions would bring to the floor a bill blocking Obamas actions late last year to shield millions from deportation.
The new bill would not be connected to legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security, however, and it would not attack Obamas earlier executive actions in 2012 to shield certain young people from deportation. Those actions are more popular than the steps Obama took last year. McConnell said he wanted to take away Democratic excuses for not voting against Obamas actions in his floor comments, which he said several centrist Democrats had previously criticized.
Some Democrats give the impression they want Congress to address the overreach. But when they vote, they always seem to have an excuse for supporting actions they once criticized, he said. So Im going to begin proceedings on targeted legislation that would only address the most recent overreach from November.
It isnt tied to DHS funding. It removes their excuse, he added.
McConnell's decision could mark a step forward from the stalemate over funding the Department of Homeland Security, which has threatened a shutdown of the agency at the end of this week.
McConnell's remarks come after Senate Democrats blocked a fourth attempt to start debate on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security and reverse Obamas immigration orders from 2012 and 2014.
Speaker John Boehners (R-Ohio) office expressed support for the move.
This vote will highlight the irresponsible hypocrisy of any Senate Democrat who claims to oppose President Obamas executive overreach on immigration, but refuses to vote to stop it,

McConnell takes a dive? Who’da thunk it?
The Republicans could control 100% of Congress and the WH and still wouldn’t get nothing done in terms of a conservative agenda.
All the democrats ever have to do is wait for McConnell to blink...and since they’re buddies of his, he always tells them it’s coming.
Thank Goodness. I was getting worried because the news is all about bad Republicans so it is refreshing to know that the real source of news is telling the truth. Good to hear.
McConnell the Week! What a turd.
It’s time for the states to tell the feds to take a long walk off a short pier.
Our central government has become more heinous and injurious to the liberties of the people, than that of King George III.
So exactly what the administration wanted them to do, which we all knew they would. Just wish Boehner would cease with the doubletalk and get real.
And I’m still batting 1,000.
if dhs employees were simply permitted to transfer to other more productive agencies (yes, I know....but still...please...) then we could all start flying again without fear of being molested, groped, or having our miserable little possessions pawed through like they were on the clearance counter at Walmart after Christmas.
All we need know is an opposition party.
They can’t ‘shutdown’ DHS even if they wanted to. These are just scare tactics and that both parties are using them is quite telling. They’re always playing us for suckers.
The R’s had the majority in Congress and the WH under GW Bush, but they were so busy tripping over themselves crossing the aisle to pass NCLB and Medicare Part D/rug that they forgot to do anything conservative. Like allow healthcare insurance to be sold across state lines and increase personal health savings accounts. Which later helped obamadontcare to be passed.
Thanks for nothing, R’s.
And here is an example why the GOP is going to lose badly in 2016. You can always count on the pubbie leadership to throw away the concerns of the base nd the country while piously claiming that they have done all that they could.
And Boehner supports it?
Jesus....
Well we knew this would happen. If you divorce it from the funding then how will it ever take effect? Obama is not going to sign legislation to stop his own amnesty.
But DHS won’t shutdown, Mitch, and you know this as well as we do.
You, sir, are a lying sack of crap.
I can’t wait to see your pitiful party go down in flames.
