McConnell offers DHS fix, but Dems pause

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that he is willing to have a vote on a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security free of controversial provisions unraveling President Barack Obama’s actions on immigration — bending to Democratic demands for a so-called “clean” funding measure.

But Democrats aren’t agreeing to that plan just yet.

McConnell (R-Ky.) outlined a strategy that would entail one vote on funding DHS — whose money runs out after Friday — through the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, and a separate vote on Friday that would block the sweeping moves on immigration that Obama issued last fall.

“With Democratic cooperation on a position that they’ve been advocating for the last two months, we can have that vote quickly,” McConnell told reporters on Tuesday. He added: “I don’t know what’s not to like about this; this is an approach that respects both points of view.”

Immediately after McConnell spoke, however, Reid said he first wants assurances from Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) that the GOP-led House will also pass the clean funding bill. Such a measure would face a steep climb in the conservative chamber because it would end the GOP’s attempt to use the DHS funding to foil Obama on immigration.

“We send a hot potato to Boehner, that doesn’t do the trick,” Reid said. He and other Senate Democrats have been aggressively pushing Republicans on a clean DHS funding bill vote for weeks.

It must be just terrible to be paralyzed by fear. As FDR famously said: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” To the quaking, cowardly Senate republicans: When you are afraid of something, you should confront your fear and deal with the thing you are afraid of. Most often the fear of something is much worse than the actual event turns out to be.

Where in the Constitution does it say that a bill is “clean” only if it gives Democrats what they want?

You have to understand, when the GOP is in the minority they have no power because Reid won’t let them debate and vote on bills. But now that the GOP has the Majority, Reid won’t let them debate and vote on bills. See how simple it is when you understand how it works?

The victorious force always demands an unconditional surrender. McConnell is the incarnation of surrender; he looks like he is always hunting for a place to sit down.

Once again, the GOP negotiating with themselves, and giving in each time. What a truly pathetic party this is.
