LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The truck driver arrested in a rail crash that injured 50 people in California had been cited for multiple driving violations in his home state of Arizona, including a 1998 conviction for driving under the influence, the Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday.
Jose Alejandro Sanchez-Ramirez, 54, was found walking and "in distress" more than a mile from the accident on Tuesday and was later taken into custody on suspicion of felony hit-and-run for leaving the scene, police said.
Bamieh said Ramirez ran for help following the impact but did not immediately call authorities because he was in shock and speaks only Spanish.

Many of the recent, illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America, cannot read or write their native language.
So, having bilingual signs won't help.
Can’t you take the driver’s license test in California in about 24 different languages? If so, then why is this an issue?

I’ve gone into the local Home Despot, and asked a question in Spanglish. The poor old guy indicated for me to wait, and that he’d get a Spanish speaker to help me. Then I’d crack up and tell him I was just jivin’ him. Try it sometime! It’s fun!
That’s what I’d like to know, although he’s obviously “documented”, as in he’s left quite a paper trail through the revolving door “justice” system.
Maybe he’s one of those “Americans-in-waiting.”
This happened where, in Southern California, and they could not find somebody within the first hour who was fluent in Spanish? I find that hard to believe. Even us English speakers know a smattering of it, enough to count your money, shop and go back home. The basics. We are not being told the whole story here. Either that or the arresting officers were ordered not to even try interrogating this illegal. “Yes Mr. Holder, we are putting the suspect in a hotel for the night. You want him checked into the nearest Hilton Hotel at taxpayer expense? “

The population of Oxnard is somewhere around 75% Hispanic. The chances that he wouldn’t have been able to find someone who spoke Spanish by calling 911 are virtually nil.

BTW, last time I was in the Department of Motor Voter I felt like I was at bull fight or Mexican wedding or something. I was the only white guy there and thought I might need an interpreter. I get my ticket and after 3 hours of this carnival, while listening to an automated sick sounding cyber voice say, “Now serving B497. I get to window #121 and here stands this 245 pound obese bureaucrat with a heavy accent. She gives me the “I hate you look” while straining to make her lips smile.
It went straight down hill from there.
