Landmark Internet rules approved

Federal regulators voted Thursday to impose sweeping net neutrality rules that supporters say are critical to protecting the freedom of the Internet.

In a party-line 3-2 vote, the Federal Communications Commission moved to embrace an approach advocated by President Obama to treat the Web like a utility in order to prevent major companies such as Comcast or Verizon from slowing, blocking or creating “toll roads” for people’s access to the Internet.

"We cannot have gatekeepers who tell us what we can and cannot do and where we can and cannot go online," said Jessica Rosenworcel, one of the FCC's three Democratic commissioners. "We cannot have a two-tiered Internet with fast lanes that speed the traffic of the privileged and leave the rest of us lagging behind."

After a decade spent by activists pushing for strong federal rules, supporters said that the tough new rules would be a strong bulwark to prevent people from being abused online. In the end, those activists helped drive more than 4 million net neutrality comments to the agency — by far an FCC record.

On Thursday, the commission’s meeting room was packed with activists, lawyers and journalists who trudged through the rare February snowfall to attend the historic hearing. Meanwhile, dozens of proponents of the rules gathered outside the agency’s Southwest Washington headquarters to cheer on the vote.

“Today, because of your efforts we are better able to allow millions of Americans to tell their stories, to reach their potential and to reach the American ideal,” said Mignon Clyburn, another Democratic commissioner, in thanking activists for their work.

The vote puts an end to a tumultuous 13-month rulemaking period prompted by a federal appeals court ruling last January, which tossed out previous regulations dating from 2010.

Anyone who saw “The Lives of Others” would know that East Germany restricted ownership of typewriters.

Is treating the internet like a public utility a step towards censorship?

It’s control. Control corrupts. This is not good.

Sites like FR and anyone not supported by the leftists now running America, will have to get a “license” and the Emperor’s agency will rule on what types of speech are allowed to be posted - OR LOSE YOUR LICENSE JUST LIKE RADIO/TV BROADCASTERS DO.

“I believe the courts will strike down Net Neutrality.
That’s why the Liberal Messiah will try to quickly use Net Neutrality for whatever evil purpose He has in mind.”

A court injunction would be needed quickly, no?

The FCC does not have the authority to pass laws like these.

These marxists are pure evil. They lie and say it's to protect the freedom of the Internet ; it's the opposite : it's socialism .

We need to file lawsuits immediately against the FCC’s illegal and unconstitutional action. Obama nor the FCC have no authority to just write net neutrality laws. Only congress can do this. Impeach obama for this and other executive power grabs.

This net neutrality is just socialism for the Internet and Obama , Soros groups etc. pushed hard for this. It's Obamacare for the Internet meant to ruin the Internet and for the gov to control content

I notice the Libtard Obama sycophants are all over the Internet telling how the new FCC Net Neutrality rules will keep ISPs from throttling certain content.

Anyone ever notice you can't get to a certain site because your ISP is stopping you from seeing it?

Yeah me neither.

Now in other countries where the government controls the Internet it happens all the time.

But here we need the Government to make sure that doesn't happen like it does in other countries where the Government stops people going to certain sites.

Yeah same old same old. Government invents a problem so they can come up with a solution which means they gain control over something they don't like because they can't tax it or control it otherwise.

It's the same crap they did with home distilling of alcohol. Couldn't tax whiskey or other distilled spirits made in homemade stills because people refused to pay the vig to the gub'ment so they came up with rules that made it illegal until you register your production and pay a tax on what you make and they claimed it was for health safety.

Same crap again. Its why I always say after every election nothing really changes, we get the same circus, just different clowns.

The only throttling I even noticed was by content providers. For instance Youtube censors anything anti-Moslem pretty fast.

The Fed Nazis are running this chicken coop now. Hold on to your @$$ and your wallet. Isn’t communism great?! The asshats were cheering when the Nazis decided to take over the net. But hey! Somebody is going to have to pay for the illegal aliens to have free access to the net in this country. We’ll be doing that.

[[You know what’s going away next? The 2nd Amendment. To me what should happen, is we should have a “million man march” on Washington.]]

The only way to get that is IF a republican with a spine heads the effort- and that aint happening-
