Landmark Internet rules approved
The Hill ^ | 02/26/2015 | Julian Hattem

Federal regulators voted Thursday to impose sweeping net neutrality rules that supporters say are critical to protecting the freedom of the Internet.

In a party-line 3-2 vote, the Federal Communications Commission moved to embrace an approach advocated by President Obama to treat the Web like a utility in order to prevent major companies such as Comcast or Verizon from slowing, blocking or creating “toll roads” for people’s access to the Internet.

"We cannot have gatekeepers who tell us what we can and cannot do and where we can and cannot go online," said Jessica Rosenworcel, one of the FCC's three Democratic commissioners. "We cannot have a two-tiered Internet with fast lanes that speed the traffic of the privileged and leave the rest of us lagging behind."

After a decade spent by activists pushing for strong federal rules, supporters said that the tough new rules would be a strong bulwark to prevent people from being abused online. In the end, those activists helped drive more than 4 million net neutrality comments to the agency — by far an FCC record.

On Thursday, the commission’s meeting room was packed with activists, lawyers and journalists who trudged through the rare February snowfall to attend the historic hearing. Meanwhile, dozens of proponents of the rules gathered outside the agency’s Southwest Washington headquarters to cheer on the vote.

“Today, because of your efforts we are better able to allow millions of Americans to tell their stories, to reach their potential and to reach the American ideal,” said Mignon Clyburn, another Democratic commissioner, in thanking activists for their work.

The vote puts an end to a tumultuous 13-month rulemaking period prompted by a federal appeals court ruling last January, which tossed out previous regulations dating from 2010.

It is fascism. They will regulate businesses to do what they want without having to bother to make them state owned. They do see it as inefficient. how long before they openly push for communism?

“Federal regulators voted Thursday to impose sweeping net neutrality rules that supporters say are critical to protecting the freedom of the Internet.”

Would this be the Ministry of Net Fairness?

(Like 1984’s Ministry of Love was in charge of torturing dissidents, the Ministry of Peace waged war, Ministry of Plenty rationed food.)

This decision has nothing to do with needing a “license” to post on the Internet. Rush Limbaugh argued that bringing the Internet under Title II would lead to licensing requirements because Title II also covers radio and TV transmissions (which require a license), but he was flat wrong. Radio and TV transmissions are covered by Title II of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Today’s decision brings the Internet under Title II of the Telecommunications Act of 1934. Totally different laws.

“A few weeks ago Obama said he realizes he has two years left so “he is going to work extra hard to bring about change”. In other words like you said, he is in a mad rush to bring about totalitarianism. Clean and oil those guns boys and girls, we are coming closer to Civil war 2 every day.”

I think so too. Without one, we slide quietly into a fascist/communist state.

Today maybe, tomorrow the nose of the camel is already under the tent. Do you not understand how the RAT party works when it comes to GIANT Government? While I was not totally correct the point I am trying to make is that as of today the RAT party now controls the internet that as of yesterday was TOTALLY FREE of regulation, just like cable TV, which is beyond the purview of the FCC. Just saying this is no different that the takeover of the nation’s medical industry or the financial industry with Dodd Frank. The RAT party only works in one mode - TOTALITARIANISM.

It wasn’t totally free of regulation yesterday, it was regulated under title I yesterday. Obviously it is more regulated today than it was yesterday, but it was most certainly not completely unregulated before today.

It’s really not worth arguing about here. Some of the arguments you see about net neutrality around here are so absurd they defy belief, but those same arguments have seemingly carried the day here.

Yes, forgo anything that directly competes with your ISP(who all happen to be content providers). That would be EXACTLY what the “internet” would have been for you in the next couple of years, had the government not taken the step to forbid the ISPs from blocking the sites and services you request on the internet.

Can you guess when the ISPs decided that they would no longer give their paying customers what the paying customers requested with the service the paying customers were paying the ISPs to provide?

Yep, the ISPs were beginning to act as bad as union labor in NYC. Yous wanna plug in a fan at a conference? Yous gotta pay a union member to plug it in for you.

And so the government is going to make sure they don't?

If by "screwing you over", you mean forcing the ISPs to allow the internet to work as it has for the last 30+ years, by forbidding the telcos to look at every piece of data coming through their networks an blocking anything that competes with the ISPs? Then yes, the feds will prevent the ISPs from blocking the content you request over the ISPs networks.

HOW DARE THE BIG BAD GOVERNMENT DO THAT. THE ISPs SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BLOCK ANY AND ALL CONTENT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, THAT THEY WANT!!!!

Here is a nice quote from Verizon, as part of their lawsuit against the FCC in 2012 - "Just as a newspaper is entitled to decide which content to publish and where, broadband providers may feature some content over others"

Yes, this is what you are fighting for. The right of the ISPs to block sending you information over the internet. PLEASE at least investigate the issue from a neutral site. You CANNOT get all your information here, as the anti-anything government sentiment around here is clouding a lot of people's ability to apply even the most simple logic to this whole issue

I still get Netflix at HD quality anytime I use it. Same for Amazon I never get buffering indicators.

I am leery of claims like this. Its easy to get some supposedly independent consumer watchdog group to churn up stuff like this so TPTB can create a problem wherein the solution is they get to control and exploit the situation in the name of the public good.
