More Lois Lerner Emails Recovered: ‘No One Will Ever Believe That Both ... Within a Week’

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced on Thursday night that hundreds of former IRS official Lois Lerner’s previously “lost” backup tapes have been recovered, which could result in the recovery of a new trove of her emails.

IRS Deputy Inspector General Timothy P. Camus told Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) on Thursday that it took investigators just two weeks to recover 424 backup tapes that were previously said to be unretrievable.

“To date, we have found 32,744 unique emails that were backed up from Lois Lerner’s email box. We are in the process of comparing these emails to what the IRS has already produced to Congress to determine if we did in fact recover any new emails,” Camus said, according to the Washington Times.

In one of the new emails, Lerner apparently wrote, “No one will ever believe that both your hard drive and mine crashed within a week of each other.”

Lois Lerner can be heard, in her best Hillary Clinton voice...”What difference, at this point, does it make?”

you think?

The hard drives crashed after a Republican started looking into an unrelated affair and she changed targetting Criteria the month after the crash. The IRS then says the tapes are unretrieavable and she pleads the fifth. they were trying to pull a CYA before anyone started looking into the matter

“Because otherwise it wouldn’t have been a missing email.”

Good point. It seems Lois Lerner’s hard drive “crashed” around June 25, 2011. That email was written approximately four days later, June 29, 2011.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/kim-strassel-about-those-missing-emails-1403220814

As to Ms. Lerner’s behavior, consider that House Ways & Means Chairman Dave Camp first sent a letter asking if the IRS was engaged in targeting in June, 2011. Ms. Lerner denied it. She engineered a plant in an audience at a tax conference in May 2013 to drop the bombshell news about targeting (maybe hoping nobody would notice?). She has subsequently asserted a Fifth Amendment right to silence in front of the only people actually investigating the affair, Congress. Now we learn that her hard drive supposedly defied modernity and suffered total annihilation about 10 days after the Camp letter arrived.

Timeline of Lois Lerner’s Targeting of Conservatives

January 21, 2010:
Citizen’s United Ruling : Supreme Court issues ruling in Citizens United case, which would lead to an active campaign by Democrats against conservative groups – a campaign Lerner was well aware of and reacted to.

January 27, 2010:
President Obama Goes on the Attack : In his State of the Union address, President Obama states: “With all due deference to separation of powers, last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign corporations – to spend without limit in our elections. I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities.”

March-April 2010:
IRS Targeting Begins : According to TIGTA, the IRS’s Determinations Unit “began searching for other requests for exemption involving the Tea Party, Patriots, 9/12 and IRC § 501(c)(4) applications involving political sounding names, e.g., ‘We the People’ or
‘Take Back the Country.’”

September 26, 2010:
White House Steps Up Attacks: David Axelrod, then-senior advisor to President Obama, referred to Crossroads GPS and similar groups as “front groups for special interests. These are front groups for foreign-controlled companies, which would have been banned under the bill that we put through Congress, and they don’t want the American people to know, and the American people ought to be alert to that.”

October 12, 2010:
Democrat Leaders Join Attack: Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin urges the IRS to investigate the tax status of Crossroads GPS and “other orgs” – though no other organizations were named.

October 19, 2010:
Lerner on Alert: Speaking to students at Duke University, Lois Lerner states that 501(c)(4) organizations were spending money on campaign activity in the wake of the Citizens United decision and claimed, “[E]verybody is screaming at us, ‘fix it now before the election….”

February 2011:
Lerner Calls Conservatives “Dangerous,” Start to Take Control: Lois Lerner sends email to IRS employees “Tea Party Matter very dangerous ….Cincy should probably NOT have these cases.”

March 24, 2011:
Democrats Step Up Attacks : DCCC launches website to “expose donors of Crossroads GPS.”

June 3, 2011:
Congressional Inquiries Begin: Chairman Camp sends letter to Commissioner Shulman inquiring about IRS targeting of taxpayers who donated money to conservative groups, as well as information regarding audits of 501(c)(4) organizations.

June 29, 2011:
Lois Lerner emails David Fish and Nicloe Flax: “No one will ever believe that both your hard drive and mine crashed within a week of each other. Life is strange.”

June 19, 2012:
White House Continues to Attack: President Obama’s lawyer demands that Crossroads GPS disclose its donors, saying in a complaint to the Federal Election Commission that the group is plainly a “political committee” subject to federal reporting requirements.

February 1, 2012:
Democrats Continue to Attack : National Public Radio reports that Senate Democrats, led by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), want to investigate groups such as Crossroads GPS.

July 10, 2012:
Lerner’s Mindset Revealed : Lois Lerner, in response to a story sent to her regarding the complaint to the FEC against Crossroads GPS replies “Perhaps the FEC will save the day.”

July 17, 2012:
Lerner Starts to Prepare Cover Story : Lerner sent an email to Holly Paz and Nikole Flax offering comments on a talking point that referred to an “uptick in political advocacy cases,” drafted for then-Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement Steve Miller. However, Lerner admits that, “I know we don’t have published SOI stats” to support such a claim.” [See letter to DOJ]

July 27, 2012:
Democrats Attack, Again : Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) sends another letter to the IRS regarding Crossroads GPS and others, seeking a probe and status.

And to think that some careless use of tape at the Watergate Hotel ultimately brought down Nixon

What brought down Nixon was an 18-month long PR campaign, designed by Mike Mansfield and Carl Albert and executed by Sam Ervin and Peter Rodino, along with the GOP's willingness to go along.

There is nothing, I believe, that could induce 13 sitting Democrat Senators (more, actually, because not all Republicans would go along) to vote to remove "Obama".

>>More Lois Lerner Emails Recovered: ‘No One Will Ever Believe That Both Your Hard Drive and Mine Crashed Within a Week’<<

Although Lerner belongs in jail, I also think that the offending email is being mischaracterized. If you read the email, the sentence quoted above is followed with the sentence, “Life is strange.”

I think the email is an attempt to document, after the fact, that it really happened coincidentally, and wasn’t a coordinated effort. Without the “Life is strange” comment, the email reads almost as an admission of guilt.

There’s a difference, and people should be made aware of it. I think they were establishing the coverup story. In fact, if they were the type of people who one would give the benefit of a doubt (they aren’t, obviously), you could view that email as evidence that it was all a coincidence, as they discussed.

So am I to believe that the email mentioning two hard drive crashes happened before at least one of the two hard drives crashed?

Because there is no reason for such an email sent afterwards to not already have been sent to Congress and made known to the public.

This smells, and I almost always give the benefit of the doubt to incompetence, especially with bureaucracies.

Got it - Makes sense.

Ready for this? In the latter part of the 60s-early 70s I worked with the FBI for a bit. On the morning that the Watergate breakin was in the papers, I was in a meeting with one of the upper ranks of the FBI and he told us that it was an operation to catch someone who was working in the Democratic Party headquarters who was passing sensitive diplomatic information on our position with the North Vietnamese in Paris to the Cuban legation at the UN for further passing to the KGB/Soviets. He implied that the whole thing was an FBI op and that L. Patrick Gray and John Dean had met early that morning at Gray's house and that they destroyed some papers.

If what I heard was true, then Nixon never had anything to do with what went on and everyone who did covered their tracks quite successfully.

>>I’ll tell you does surprise me about this story. It’s the Inspectors General, they seem to be honest and honorable people.<<

Yes, and the IRS IG at that. Maybe the GOP-forced budget cuts are already knocking some sense into the IRS?

Of course, it’s more likely that we finally found two honest people in a position to help ferret out the corruption.

>>not in this case. Indict too soon she gets a presidential pardon.<<

Probably doesn’t matter. I believe that the President can pardon for all acts committed, whether revealed at the time of the pardon or not. I could be wrong, however.

It wasn’t the tape that brought down Nixon. It was the old media. Watergate was a media coup.

Roosevelt, Wilson, Kennedy, Johnson.. they all did much worse, the media new about it and covered for them.

The media hated Nixon, and they hounded him out of office.
