Leonard Nimoy, who lived long and prospered, died Friday at his Los Angeles home.

The creator of Mr. Spock, television’s most beloved pointy-eared half-Vulcan, was 83 and had suffered for several years from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), which makes it difficult to breathe.

“I quit smoking 30 yrs ago,” he tweeted last week. “Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP.”

“LLAP” was Spock’s best-known catch phrase: Live long and prosper.

To many of his fans, Leonard Nimoy was a one-hit wonder.

One hit that lasted half a century.

Nimoy created the beloved Mr. Spock in the 1960s cult TV show “Star Trek” and brought him back to life in movies, sequels, cartoons and spinoffs for the rest of his life.

To me there were no other Star Treks. They were the originals and will always be remembered as legends after they both pass...

Chronic smoking would explain his unique rich baritone voice. Unfortunately what made him famous ultimately killed him.

RIP Spock.

An era had ended.

Condolences to his family.

From the article: The creator of Mr. Spock,

Mr. Nimoy was the actor who played Mr. Spock. Gene Roddenberry was the creator of the Star Trek TV show.

Oh yeah, that would be heartbreaking. One of the best funeral scenes in a movie, IMHO.

A hero to many of us from early TV to the last Trek film. I sure hope he was a Christian. He needs to live eternally and he gave us much joy and wit.

I sure hope he was a Christian.

He was Jewish, but I don't know how religious.

He was also good in the old conspiracy pre Art Bell TV series “In Search Of”. Like the above poster said, he had a very rich voice. He was a cultural icon that will be missed. RIP

There was some truth in Bill Shatner’s infamous SNL sketch in which he dismissed Star Trek as ‘an episodic TV show we did for a lark for a few years.’ But Leonard Nimoy knew almost immediately the appeal and impact of the Spock character which went beyond the white hat-black hat simplicity of the medium and eventually Shatner himself admitted the same.

Star Trek (and Star Wars) have been credited with turning science fiction into science reality by inspiring legions of tech-minded individuals who took the fictional Vulcan philosophy of ‘logic above all else’ seriously.

Gene Roddenberry should be credited for devising the ‘insider who is really an outsider’ character but that was a mere outline. Nimoy grasped the opportunity with both hands, and by refusing to insult the intelligence of the audience he won their undying loyalty (politicians take note).

Spock/Nimoy is on the Mt Rushmore of 20th Century television AND film through the intensity and complexity of his performance. No mean feat.

Coincidence, or correlation?

Two "voices" from The Big Bang Theory have died in the past 12 months.
