Wisconsin, Workers and the 2016 Election
New York Times ^ | February 26, 2015 | Editorial Board

Posted on 02/27/2015 10:56:52 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

The Republican-dominated Senate in Wisconsin passed a bill this week to weaken the state’s private-sector unions. Similar to “right-to-work” laws in 24 other states, the bill would prevent unions from requiring dues or other fees from workers they represent in collective bargaining, a crippling constraint. The Republican-run State Assembly is expected to pass the bill next week, and Gov. Scott Walker, who stripped Wisconsin’s public employees of collective bargaining rights in 2011 and is now eyeing the Republican presidential nomination, has said he would sign it.

In a nation where the long decline in unions has led to a pervasive slump in wages, Republicans’ support for anti-union legislation is at odds with their professed commitments to helping the middle class. Right-to-work laws do not attract businesses and create jobs, as proponents claim. Rather, they are linked to lower wages, fewer benefits and higher poverty. They win support among conservative lawmakers not because they are in the public interest but because cutting labor costs is a priority of far-right groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council, which is tied to the Koch brothers. The Wisconsin bill is almost verbatim from a model provided by ALEC.....

I must say, from the comments [expanded] to this OpEd, it's obvious that not all their readers are buying the "unions are needed or wages are low" nonsense.

There may be hope.

Wisconsin has been a shocker.
Stuff has happened there that I NEVER believed could happen in a “Blue Wall” state.

Not an Op-Ed. This is an NYT editorial.

Go Wisconsin!

I understand that Walker’s Lt. Gov. is more conservative then he is — and good looking too.

New York Times, the nation’s newspaper of record, or AlterNet?

Just can’t seem to tell anymore.

If unions were really delivering such wonderful things to their members, workers would be lining up to join and more than eager to send in their monthly dues check.

Obviously they are not.

In a nation where the long decline in unions has led to a pervasive slump in wages . . .

What a crock! And I suppose open borders and the Wall Street quest for cheaper and cheaper labour has absolutely nothing to do with it.

By the way, Walker isn't targeting unions . . . he is targeting public employee unions which are organized against the taxpayer. Even FDR abhorred such unions.

Yeah he is. Right to work laws target private sector unions. And to be fair, he's only targeting public sector unions that opposed him in the elections.

Right to work laws target private sector unions.

Yeah, they do, but only in the perverse sort of way that free markets target cartels. If the cartel is really providing their members with tangible benefits worth more than the cost of membership, then people would be lining up to join unions. They aren't. What does that tell you?

And so what if Walker is targeting the unions which targeted him? They who live by the political sword should expect to be the first to have that same sword used against them.
