WLS (Chicago) ready to drop Rush Limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh, who’s been a fixture on WLS AM 890 for more than 25 years, is about to get the bum’s rush from the Cumulus Media news/talk station, sources said Wednesday. If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS.

A Cumulus Media spokeswoman declined immediate comment. But a source familiar with the decision said it was based on the show’s diminished ratings and failure to generate advertising revenue for the station, adding: “It’s impossible to sell.”

His prep is not the problem. I happen to know (long story) that he has enough prep for 10 shows every day. At least. But I do think Katherine has an impact on him that is not appreciated by his long time listeners - those of us who have “known him” so to speak long before she ever heard of him.

Your pillow buddy matters.....period.

“Perhaps Sears and/or Roebuck will buy them back.”

I hear their old tower is for sale again - maybe they’ll try to buy that back first.

(And I’ll spare you my comments on WGN - the fishwrap that endorsed Obambi, not the radio station).

I don’t listen to him as much as before. Too much tea time, too much promoting of his books, golf talk, football talk, etc. I guess he’s trying to vary the topics of the show, but Rush is at his best discussing current events and politics. Anything else, well, there are other channels for that.

“I think that it’s more a pre-Katherine thing. Ever since he got married Rush has been literally “phoning it in”...”

I agree, she has taught him how to spend his money and he likes it... The show has suffered since this romance started...

It’s called “staying relevant”. Like it or not, this isnt 1993 anymore, and Rush isnt the big fish he once was.

If this is the attitude he has, then don’t be shocked if more stations don’t feel the need to keep him on if his influence isn’t bringing in listeners to their stations. Mark Levin writes books, gives speeches, does TV appearances, and thus he is far more relevant to today’s politics than Rush is, who seems to just be riding out the past power of the show until it’s time to hang up the hat.

Chicago is filled with lefties, commies, race protected, sex protected and middle of the road “I could care less about politics” types.

I can easily see WLS cutting him. They have been butchering and cutting talent for years now.

I like Dennis a lot. Never thought I would say that when he was with SNL. And when he went to MNF I thought that was a bad decision yet I liked his input.

Since I moved from Chicago, on occasion I’ll put on WLS on the net. Kass was kind of slow and dull but he is usually a straight shooter who doesn’t kiss all the Chicago Pols butts or fear them. He had courage and I believe he was the guy who showed me what Obama was all about when there was still some mystery mid 2000s. He was the first guy that I read who exposed the clever bribe Rezko gave Obama.

WLS has no idea what to do, it’ll be musical chairs for years.

Women. They're something else.

yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

About the only medium for politics for these “kids” today is the Comedy Channel and now that O’Reilly clone left and Funny John S is leaving I wonder who/what will fill the vacuum.

Well someone pissed in your Rush cornflakes, and I can’t remove the stench. Be bitter. Think you know what’s relevant and the right way to carry out a career or save the Republic. You’re only making yourself miserable.

One thing we know fo shizzle....he’s done a damned sight more than you’ll ever do for the country. Sorry that’s not good enough for you.

And Mark Levin is very relevant indeed, but I’m not sure I’d agree he’s more relevant than Rush. I’m glad they both are doing what they are doing. And while I always turn off Rush when he gets into his books or his tea, I’m glad he did the books and I’m glad a lot of young folks are reading them. That’s what we call “relevance.”

Ed's listening to the same one I'm listening to. I've listened to virtually every Rush show since 1993. I used to record it on cassette recorders with timers, until I could download the pod casts.

The latest shows have become so tiresome that I often stop listening. The last half hour is almost all prime time ads. Between that, and the near daily children, whom he listens to whine about their history books until he gives them a free audio book, he has become nearly intolerable. Then he will spend multiple segments bragging about knowing some obscure NFL player nobody else has heard of or cares to hear about.

I think he's loosing it. When he gets on his rants (the latest is net neutrality), he simply repeats himself over, and over, again.

WCFL was a moribund station when radio was still Da Bomb.

You made some valid points, and I agree with some of your sentiment. But on the repeating thing - if you listen every day for almost all the show, you are not “using the product” the way it is intended...or more to the point....not using it the way the majority of listeners do.

Most listeners only hear a portion, and only a few days a week. The show is geared for the majority of the listeners. Yeah, if you listen a lot, you do hear stuff repeated. I’d just recommend listening a little less....

“Well someone pissed in your Rush cornflakes, and I can’t remove the stench. Be bitter. Think you know what’s relevant and the right way to carry out a career or save the Republic. You’re only making yourself miserable.”

Wha?

I started listening to Limbaugh when I was a Jr. High student back in 1991. I read both of his books before I finished 9th grade. And I listened to as much of his show that I could record daily on a 90min cassette as a high school student, and then listened as an adult daily up until 2007.

So no, I’m not some Rush basher. The show just stopped defining the debate as much as it had when I was a kid because people were shifting to new outlets. AM radio does not have the draw that it once did and that is why the left is dominating the debate while people are still turning to an AM radio show that is diminishing in its influence every year.

Not that Rush isnt a player, he just isnt the single big player anymore. That’s just fact.

If you have time to sit by a radio for 2.5 hours + radio ads and biased radio news at the bottom of the hour, then you are part of a rapidly diminishing group.

It was directional in the wrong direction so I could only hear it some nights when the atmospheric wave skip was good. Not very often.
