When I was in college in the mid-late 70's it was the first time I was exposed to lots of gays. I was a theater major and the department was crawling with them. It was also crawling with hot heterosexual girls. Guys like me had to jump through all the hoops guys have jumped through since time immemorial to get dates with the girls. However, the gays seemed to have no barriers whatever about having as much sex as possible. So, when some young guy would join the department as a freshman, if he was intimidated by girls but wanted to have sex, all he had to do was say "I'm gay", or "I'm not sure if I'm gay or straight", and he could be having sex that very day with one or several gay guys. They seemed to be quite casual about having sex with whomever happened to be gay.

I think sex for love and sex for distraction is inherently different.
