OAKLAND - Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf made a pitch Wednesday morning for the 82 percent of Oakland voters who passed a minimum wage hike in November to support local businesses struggling to adjust to higher costs.
"It's time for Oaklanders to put their money where their votes were," Schaaf said at a news conference outside of Farley's East coffee shop on Grand Avenue.

The utter banality of this is beyond confounding. If they wanted to help in the first place, stupid government officials should not be passing onerous, burdensome laws that defy basic tenets of economics. ARRRRRGGH!!!

I assume it’s a higher minimum wage
- which makes employees happier,
- which causes them to provide better service,
- which draws in more customers,
- which makes more money for the business owner.
And if it doesn’t, “business owners are like gazillionaires or something” so they just need to eat less caviar on their next transatlantic flight to ski in Europe.

Farley's co-owner Chris Hillyard appeared alongside Schaaf to say he supports the enactment of a higher minimum wage, despite the largest increase in costs in the six-year history of his business.
"We believe in paying our employees a fair wage," he said, but his business now needs to generate more income, which means higher prices in order to pay his workers the new wage.
"This industry operates on a razor-thin margin," Hillyard said, with payroll as the biggest expense.

Poor people count every last penny and haggle over the half cent. They have to.
As for the “solidarity” thing of paying more to help everyone else....Uh, not exactly something your ethnic group is known for, huh Libby? Why do you expect others to be like that?

They need people to be subservient - in fear of losing their jobs if they step out of line.
This only works if all the neighboring towns of Oakland do likewise. Otherwise it is a short drive to lower prices.
To add clarity: A typical McDonalds employees will now have to pay more for the same Big Mac. So, their wage increase is instantly consumed by higher prices. So the net gain is zero, or worse, less than zero.
Simple rule: nothing is free and someone always has to pay and that someone just might be you. I wonder how many liberal politicians realize this. I bet that many do but the game is to buy votes.
