McConnell vows to raise debt limit without threat of shutdown or default(surrender before the fight)

Republicans will raise the government’s borrowing limit without threatening a default, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell guaranteed Sunday, placating the markets but potentially surrendering the party’s leverage as Congress gears up for another debt showdown.

The current debt-ceiling holiday, to which Congress agreed a year ago, expires Sunday, starting the clock on debate and sending the Treasury Department scrambling to tap into its “extraordinary measures” to keep from breaching the limit.

Budget analysts say Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has about seven months of spare room, meaning a deal would have to be reached by October or November.

Mr. McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said on the CBS program “Face the Nation” on Sunday that Republicans may try to attach some of their priorities to the debate but won’t force another shutdown showdown as it has in the past.

“I made it very clear after the November election that we’re certainly not going to shut down the government or default on the national debt. We will figure some way to handle that. And, hopefully, it might carry some other important legislation that we can agree on in connection with it,” he said.

How’s that Republican “majority” working out?

They’ll cave on everything but in two years will get the gullible base to re-elect them again.

Assuming the government is still configures according to the provisions in the Constitution in 2016 just why would anything be different after the 2016 election? We all work hard to get our guys elected and send them to Washington. When our guys get to Washington they are not our guys anymore. They personally gain far more by becoming part of the Ruling Class than they possibly can by continuing with the principles they were sent to Congress with. That applies even if they should lose their re-elections. The government has reached a size such that the corruption is all consuming.

And remember that almost all of the people we send to Congress are politicians or they would not be running in the first place. In a small government with few regulatory agencies politics is much simpler. Your representatives do not have the opportunities for immense wealth by joining a corrupt system. When the corporations and individuals must get permission from a regulatory agency for just about everything then the corruption is all consuming. It is much more profitable for a politician to partake.< P>A system that has grown that large cannot be reformed. It can only collapse or be overthrown. If overthrown the system that replaces will start out corrupt and very large. If it collapses then the replacement will probably be the Man On A Horse. When a republican and free market system with a large population becomes wealthy it becomes rich enough to support a great number of people who do not produce. There are the Academics and journalists and the trustfunders who do not produce but have the time and the resources to engage in utopian fantasies and there is the ever larger number of welfare people. Nonproducers do not understand that wealth must be created and fall into the dream that wealth is constant and that everything would be better if it were all shared out equally. The resources controlled by these groups and their votes guarantee that the free market system cannot survive.

This is why the GOP will continued to get out maneuvered by the Democrat minority.

McConnell has declared that his most effective weapon will not be used.

Even if he didn't want to use it, he shouldn't publicly proclaim it. I guess he fears the political fallout of a shutdown, though recent history shows that conservative voters support a shutdown, and strong negotiating tactics against the Dems.

McConnell is one of those establishment Washington types that somehow dream that they will one day win over the media. Give it up, it will never happen, and besides, it's a meaningless victory if you do win.

“Republicans may try to attach some of their priorities to the debate but won’t force another shutdown showdown as it has in the past.”

I am sure McConnel has not discussed this with his boss Harry Ried. his boss will require a clean bill and nothing else. That is the new standard for a Republican lead Senate.

Someone needs to ask McConnell: “Is there any limit to the amount of debt you are willing to saddle America with? If yes, the what’s the number and how did you arrive at it?”
