Gun ownership among Americans at a record low, survey finds

By Tribune wire reports contact the reporter

The number of Americans who live in a household with at least one gun is lower than it's ever been, according to a major American trend survey that finds the decline in gun ownership is paralleled by a reduction in the number of Americans who hunt.

According to the latest General Social Survey, 32 percent of Americans either own a firearm themselves or live with someone who does, which ties a record low set in 2010. That's a significant decline since the late 1970s and early 1980s, when about half of Americans told researchers there was a gun in their household.

The General Social Survey is conducted by NORC, an independent research organization based at the University of Chicago, with money from the National Science Foundation. Because of its long-running and comprehensive set of questions about the demographics, behaviors and attitudes of the American public, it is a highly regarded source of data about social trends. lRelated Activists push bill to openly carry handguns in Texas

Data from the 2014 survey was released last week, and an analysis of its findings on gun ownership and attitudes toward gun permits was conducted by General Social Survey staff.

The drop in the number of Americans who own a gun or live in a household with one is probably linked to a decline in the popularity of hunting, from 32 percent who said they lived in a household with at least one hunter in 1977 to less than half that number saying so now.

Brace yourself people - you can readily expect this survey to be parroted back at you whenever you discuss the 2nd amendment with any of the nation’s Socialists.

As it typical of the nation’s Socialists from the Left, they do thier best to deny reality.

Expect them to claim that all those guns being sold are going to fewer and fewer gun owners who are ‘hoarding’ them.. or something.

It also wouldn’t surprise me to find out the Government is doing some of this polling to gather more intel on gun owners.

In this report, highly critical of the National Science Foundation (NSF), Senator Coburn argued that poor management and practices at NSF have resulted in losses of over $1.2 billion due to “waste, fraud, duplication and mismanagement”, with a further $1.7 billion in unspent funds.[1] The report fingered several studies that exemplify “waste and duplication”; those cited in the press release included: “$80,000 study on why the same teams always dominate March Madness”, “$315,000 study suggesting playing FarmVille on Facebook helps adults develop and maintain relationships;” “$1 million for an analysis of how quickly parents respond to trendy baby names;” “$50,000 to produce and publicize amateur songs about science, including a rap called “Money 4 Drugz,” and a misleading song titled “Biogas is a Gas, Gas, Gas”;” “$2 million to figure out that people who often post pictures on the internet from the same location at the same time are usually friends;” and “$581,000 on whether online dating site users are racist.”[1] Ineffective management examples, cited in report, included “Hundreds of millions of dollars lost to ineffective contracting”; “$1.7 billion in unspent funds sitting in expired, undisbursed grant accounts;” “At least $3 million in excessive travel funds”; “A lack of accountability or program metrics to evaluate expenditures” and “Inappropriate staff behavior including porn surfing and Jello wrestling and skinny-dipping at NSF-operated facilities in Antarctica”.[1]

I think it’s more simple than that. How many gun owners refuse to talk to surveyors? How many more beyond that refuse to tell people they own guns?

If some commie asked you if you owned any guns, what would tell him or her? I actually had a doctor ask me if I had any guns. I said no, because it was true, and immediately went out and bought one! Scary times!

“As it typical of the nation’s Socialists from the Left, they do their best to deny reality.”

Actually, they are usually trying to create a “false reality” through their push polls and other devices.

Liberals are in your face when it comes to their views including gun control. They are happy to tell you they don't have guns and don't want anybody else to have them. Most people want to avoid issues they perceive as being controversial or just figure it s none of some pollster's business whether you do or do not have a gun. It is for these reasons I think the poll is inaccurate.

Based on my personal knowledge of friends and family the percentage is much higher than the survey, even with very few being hunters.

Millions made rapping on guns, Snoop Dogg urges investors to sell gun stocks
By Paul Bedard | March 9, 2015 | 12:54 pm

Gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg, who once glorified guns in his money-making hits, is calling on some 51 million Americans with 401k retirement investments to divest from stocks in weapons companies.

Stepping up his assault on guns, Dogg on Monday joined with other celebrities in the #ImUnloading campaign to hit “the gun industry where it matters most: their wallet.”

His new PSA follows the anti-gun song he cut in 2013.

“I’m unloading for my loved ones that I’ve lost,” Dogg said. “I’m going all in for gun free investing.”

Senate GOP Slams Obama Plan to Ban Armor-Piercing Ammo

Tuesday, 10 Mar 2015 12:46 PM

By Drew MacKenzie
Senate Republicans have blasted a plan by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to ban armor-piercing bullets used in a popular assault rifle, claiming it infringes on Second Amendment rights.

The 53 senators fired off an angry letter to ATF Director Todd Jones demanding that the agency abandon the proposal to make it illegal to buy and sell the .223 M855 “green-tip” ammo commonly used in the AR-15, a civilian version of the military’s M16 rifle, according to The Hill.

“Second Amendment rights require not only access to firearms, but to bullets,” said the letter sent out on Monday.
“If law-abiding gun owners cannot obtain rifle ammunition, or face substantial difficulty in finding ammunition available and at reasonable prices because government entities are banning such ammunition, then the Second Amendment is at risk.”

After the General Social Survey group asked about guns they questioned citizens about gold coins in their homes.. and sure enough almost no citizens own gold coins either...

The question after that was about ‘type of home security alarms’... but on that question seems everyone had one... waaaay more than expected.

It’s a mystery all alright...

I think it’s more simple than that. How many gun owners refuse to talk to surveyors? How many more beyond that refuse to tell people they own guns?

Every gun owner should choose one of two answers when asked about their firearms by outside sources. 1.) I don't own any firearms. 2.) If pressed, my firearms were disabled and then destroyed.

No need to have the boating accident story.
