IT Expert Says He Traced Hillary’s Email Server To Manhattan Government Building [VIDEO]
Daily Caller ^ | March 11, 2015 | Chuck Ross

Posted on 03/11/2015 8:50:12 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Cyber-security expert Vinny Troia told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday that he traced the IP address of the server Hillary Clinton used to host the private email account she used as secretary of state to a government building in the heart of New York City.

“I did read reports that [the server] was at her house, but when we traced the IP address it came back to the city office here in downtown Manhattan,” Troia told Van Susteren.

Troia is CEO of the IT consulting firm Night Lion Security.

The exact location of Clinton’s server has been a mystery, though after The Associated Press reported on its existence last week it was assumed by many to have been kept at her Chappaqua, N.Y. residence. The AP reported that the server was registered to that location and to a longtime Clinton associate......

....“Assuming that the city officials did set this up, they would have the facilities in their building to set this up,” Troia told Van Susteren. “It’s not a small thing to have at your house. So you would need a pretty large Internet connection to keep it up to make sure it doesn’t go down.”

Van Susteren was clearly intrigued by the revelation.

She asked if the IP address was traced back to the headquarters of the Clinton Foundation, the family’s global charity.

Troia said it was not.

Instead, using Google Maps, Troia found that the latitude and longitude for the building came up in downtown Manhattan.

“It was a city of New York officials’ building,” he said.

Troia provided a screen shot of a map of the location in a tweet he sent out after the interview with Van Susteren......

No, it’s a pretty standard procedure for anyone trying to do this. Whether the person doing it is a hacker (in which case they will go to hacking resources to find the info, or get it via social engineering), or law enforcement (in which case they can just subpoena the records, or perhaps simply ask for them and get access).

“I doubted the infamous server was in her Chapaqua home as it would likely take more than an Internet connection from the local cable company”

Wrong. There are bazillions of servers out there running on standard residential cable internet connections.

Can someone tell me how it is more convenient to buy, setup, configure, maintain, and manage your own email server versus using the @.Gov.

H*****y's "convenience" excuse is just a smokescreen. That has nothing to do with the reason for using a private server. Recall her statement that all her work related email would have been with other people on .gov servers, so the mail would be archived that way.

But her emails with non-US government entities would be off the record entirely. Given the Clintons' penchant for doing dirty under-the-table deals with countries, organizations, and individuals that are not, shall we say, friendly with the US, H*****y's server would be the only place in the US (besides the NSA, of course) where those emails would exist.

She never pick you to ask a question. Notice yesterday that each and ever question was answered by her flipping her speech to the next page and reading the script. The entire Q&A was pre-arranged.

Hillary's mail server is inside the Internap Secaucus Datacenter (NYJ001) in New Jersey.

It is located at 755 Secaucus Road, Secaucus, New Jersey, United States 07094.

You can contact the Internap Secaucus Datacenter (NYJ001) at (877) 406-2248.

  $ tracert 64.94.172.146
Tracing route to 64.94.172.146 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms router [10.0.0.254]
2 37 ms 37 ms 37 ms he-0-3-0-0-cr01.350ecermak.il.ibone.comcast.net [68.86.88.142]

9 * * * Request timed out.

The route ends up at border2.pc1-bbnet1.nyj001.pnap.net. The "nyj001" is the main clue. It is the Internap co-location service bureau in Secaucus, New Jersey.

AS13789 has DNS records for a diverse collection of sites. This is more evidence that the server is actually inside a data center - not a server sitting somebody's basement.

Interesting.

According to Maxmind, both 64.94.172.146 and 216.52.95.10 are at the downtown NYC location given in the article. But your traceroute is more convincing.

Since that's a co-location center, I wonder if it's the same box that used to be installed at their Chappaqua manse.

One possibility is, they sanitized the server at their house, then rented a server at Internap and copied their sanitized email setup to it and trashed the old box. That would frustrate forensic attempts to recover what the sanitizing deleted.

If you go to https://mail.clintonemail.com/, you see a login screen:

It has a 2010 copyright. I wonder if they've been keeping up the patches.

A traceroute of 216.52.95.10 also ends up at NYJ001.

As you indicated, it is very possible that it might have been moved there recently from wherever it was located previously.

The Outlook 2010 copyright means the server has Microsoft Exchange 2010 installed. (It does not necessarily mean the site is unpatched. Patches often don’t update the copyright.)

Microsoft Exchange has a fairly elaborate mailbox backup/archive system that backs up all the whole EDB database on a regular schedule. It’s the same one the IRS used for the Lerner emails. You have to manually turn it off in Exchange Manager to disable it.

A traceroute of 216.52.95.10 also ends up at NYJ001.

216.52.95.10 is the penultimate hop in your traceroute and therefore more than likely also inside the co-location center.

Keep it up guys!! This is reminiscent of the work done by Freepers in 2004 to uncover the fake (”but accurate”) Bush National Guard papers. It eventually led to Dan Rather’s downfall at CBS News.

Not a chance, Very very difficult to track a virtual IP, as far as I know only the NSA could do it.

If she is at a location with Verizon FIOS (New York telco), she can get the bandwidth... That location on the map that was shown is “Soundwalk” http://soundwalkcollective.com/ I do not know if it means anything but they sound like Hillary supporters.

"If I were a journalist and assigned to Hillary! and her campaign or not-campaign, I would be at any function where she spoke and said anything and be the first to ask “and with regard to what you just said, how does this figure in with your email debacle?”

"You have directly stated that your predecessors did the same thing ... but ... they didn't."

(stuned silence)

"Furthermore, if - as you and some of your pathetic cadre, er, supporters have suggested - that this was a popular abuse, er, implementation of MX servers, then why has every single executive and legislative member ahead of you in the line of succession NEVER used inline private email servers for Federal communications, notifications, or functions?"

(more stuned silence)

"Finally, you said that you often emailed the former President Clinton, your husband, via this private email server, only to have his factotum directly contradict that by firmly stating that his boss, the former President Clinton, has utilized email exactly TWICE since his inauguration, over TWO decades ago. How do you reconcile your story, er, idiocy, er, that?"

You cannot, with any certainty, trace an IP address to any specific physical location. It just don’t work that way.

Maybe 'we' can't (using some internet utility program) but the internet provider can.
