Surprised? So were the researchers who tested and compared workers in 23 countries.
We hear about the superior tech savvy of people born after 1980 so often that we tend to assume it must be true. But is it?
Researchers at Princeton-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) expected it to be when they administered a test called the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Sponsored by the OECD, the test was designed to measure the job skills of adults, aged 16 to 65, in 23 countries.
When the results were analyzed by age group and nationality, ETS got a shock. It turns out, says a new report, that Millennials in the U.S. fall short when it comes to the skills employers want most: literacy (including the ability to follow simple instructions), practical math, and hold on to your hat a category called problem-solving in technology-rich environments.
Not only do Gen Y Americans lag far behind their overseas peers by every measure, but they even score lower than other age groups of Americans.
Take literacy, for instance. American Millennials scored lower than their counterparts in every country that participated except Spain and Italy. (Japan is No. 1.) In numeracy, meaning the ability to apply basic math to everyday situations, Gen Yers in the U.S. ranked dead last.
Okay, but what about making smart use of technology, where Millennials are said to shine? Again, America scored at the bottom of the heap, in a four-way tie for last place with the Slovak Republic, Ireland, and Poland.
Even the best-educated Millennials stateside couldnt compete with their counterparts in Japan, Finland, South Korea, Belgium, Sweden, or elsewhere. With a masters degree, for example, Americans scored higher in numeracy than peers in just three countries: Ireland, Poland, and Spain.

But American Millenials can tell you about gender equality and social justice!
Smart phones, stupid people.
Says it all.
Well, hell, we give them the sheepskin, isn’t that enough? /s
Works for Holder’s people.....
Ain’t gummint union schools great!
Texting, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, trivia Crack, etc. doesn’t require a skill? I think they’re wrong.
They have no concept of how much pure knowledge precedes the invention of computers.
But, they can plug in a play station and blog on trendy lib sites. I don’t understand! /s
(No offense to the millenialls who TRULY do "get it"!)
I don’t know about “skills”, but as far as hobbies go they may be the least “hobbied” of the past 4 generations and I find that troubling.
We needed a study for this? I was just pretty much forced into hiring one. He’s next to useless. He requires more direct supervision than I have time or inclination to provide, and on things that aren’t difficult. They just require attention to detail, focus, and the ability to prioritize tasks and keep ahead of deadlines. He has taken on less than half the responsibilities the job entails, and he’s already floundering.
Oh yes, they can tell you about gay marriage and smoking pot, but ask about any other skill and your SOL.
I would agree with that. I have some cousins who are Millenials and they have bupkis for hobbies. When any of the aforementioned cousins deso try a hobby, they become upset that they have to achieve competency through practice, practice, and more practice.
But they have high self-esteem and feel they DESERVE it all. Doesn’t that count?
Exactly... Thirty years of ‘progressive” education has created an army of mindless, self absorbed idiots.
As long as they vote for Big Government and tolerate corruption that’s all that matters.
*deso = does
>> Surprised?
No one is surprised.
The scumbags on the Left are totally responsible for this, and must be routed!
