TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) How many people have a gun in their home?
Well its not as many as you might think, thats according to new numbers fired out by a U.S. Trend survey.
News 10 spoke to Owner of Top Guns, Steve Ellis, to find out the reason for the decline.
Hunting was the one reason they gave for their numbers being down as far as household ownership, said Ellis.
According to the survey only 32% of Americans own a gun themselves or live in a house with someone who does, that number matches a record low set in 2010. Its a significant decline since the early 1980s, when about half of Americans told researchers there was a gun inside their home.
However individual ownership is still steady and in some regions on the rise, said Ellis.
Data from the FBIs National Instant Criminal Background Check system shows that in recent years theres actually been an increase in the number of background checks being run, suggesting the total number of firearms being purchased is going up.
So why the decline in gun ownership but an increase in sales? Theres no clear answer, but Ellis has some ideas.
Certainly since we are in an economy that isnt thriving as well as it perhaps could be, so maybe there is more people getting together and sharing a home.
However, in the Wabash Valley theres an upward trend in both sales and ownership.
Were not seeing a decrease in hunters, but we are also seeing ownership for defensive purposes on the increase, said Ellis.
More women are among those who are looking to arm themselves.
When it comes to women were seeing more come in for self defense purposes not so much for hunting.
Ellis said despite the survey he doesnt see the boom in business going down anytime soon.
I think that ownership is still very prevalent, and its still a part of who we are here in the United States.
I don't believe that.
Nov. 2012 and Dec. 2012
And it continues...
And there is more...
And more...
the public has be taught very well to NEVER tell.
the point of the survey is to IMPLY owners are the minority rather than the majority. Background checks, and mere stock valuations tell a much different story.
Survey probably did not ask about any canoeing accidents.
Soooo....Ruger, S & W et al are all experiencing...downsizing?
Having trouble believing it.
Seriously? They think anyone but the brain dead will beleive this nonsense?
Gun sales rocketed undee Obama. This past Christmas went to a Cabelas to check some hguns out and the lines were outstanding. lines were 3-4 deep up and down the counters...
I would not tell anyone (outside my group) if i own weapons or how many or what type.
Yep. Reminds me of (in the opposite direction) the anonymous sex survey we got as college freshman. Oh man, we were getting laid like there was no tomorrow, 90% of us. Ha ha ha
It is a bogus survey. Gun sales are at record levels in America.
Or maybe those who want to answer on survey they have guns in their home is low.
Who do you trust with that information?
Let's see..
The top 3 contenders of whom I would NOT want to know that:
(Drum-roll)
3. Local Government
2. State Government
1. Feral Government!
[Don't expect me and my brethren to answer that if you all come a-callin!]
Funny how that seems to be happening so often these days...
It's almost like We the people don't trust the Government any more...
ROFLMAO!!!!
People responding to surveys are down to 9%.
BTW, how’s my darling, Selma?
I lost my guns in a bizarre gardening accident.
Now the BATFE knows you buried them in your garden.
“I” don’t have a garden.
I lost my guns in a bizarre volcano incident. Feel free to dive in and look for them, officer.
