'Zebra Killer' J.C.X. Simon found dead in San Quentin prison cell

SAN FRANCISCO — J.C.X. Simon—one of the so-called "Zebra Killers" convicted of multiple murders of white San Franciscans in the 1970s—has died, prison officials said Friday.

Simon, 69, was pronounced dead at San Quentin prison at 11:59 p.m. Thursday after being found unresponsive in his cell, Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said. The cause of death is unknown pending the results of an autopsy.

I was visiting in San Francisco when these killings were happening. We drove to the SF Zoo, and the roads were practically deserted even though it was early afternoon. That was how spooked everybody was, I presume.

We pulled up to a traffic light and a motorbike with 2 young blacks on it pulled up right beside us. One of them was wearing a "Death Angels" patch. The guy on the back turned and stared right at me through my open window. It was one of the most evil and frightening looks I have ever seen. The hair stood right up on the back of my neck and every fiber in me screamed "Danger!". Fortunately, the light changed right then and off I went as fast as I could. It was a day or two later when the story broke and they rounded up a bunch of these killers. I sometimes wonder if they were sizing us up.

Read the opening lines in Clark Howards “Zebra Killers” not any PC sanitized that came later. The California DOJ was investigating a series of murders up and down the state. The body count for the Death Angel cult was thought to be over +100. The SF bay area murders were just the tip of the iceberg.

In a related matter I tried to get that book from the SF library. They only had 1 copy that they retrieved from an archive and you only had 30 minutes to look at it while you sat at a table and a library employee watched you.

I lived in the East Bay during that very scary time. I had a job that took me to the city every weekday and I tried to grow eyes in the back of my head.

During the Patty Hearst/SLA business I later realized I'd driven by the apartment house where she was being held very often with no clue she was inside.

What was really scary was when my truck was mobbed in East Palo Alto where I was making a delivery. I hadn't realized it was the location for one of the Hearst food giveaways and the mob thought I was carrying the free goodies. I locked the doors, put the truck into the lowest gear and idled forward. I decided any fool that stood in its way wanted to commit suicide. It took awhile but I finally got free of the crazies. Those were frightening days and those two events were just a small part of the violence that was going on in the name of "civil rights" and anarchy.

My wife was born there and I always thought it was one of the best and prettiest cities in the country and maybe the world and we used to love to go back there.

Then it took it's long, dark Left turn in the 60s with the Hippie Movement, radicalism, and drugs. It has been Crazytown for years and we don't care if we ever go back again. The particular incident I related above was probably the turning point.
