Oops: US Close-Air Support Bomb Doesn't Fit on the F-35

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will not receive the software package required to operate the Pentagon’s top close-air support bomb until 2022, according to military.com.

The article also stated that the JSF office already had discovered earlier that the precision-guided air-dropped Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) does not fit onto Joint Strike Fighter Marine Corps variant without modifications to the aircraft’s weapons bay.

Yet the Department of Defense will wait until the F-35 B (the Marine Corps variant of the F-35) reaches initial operability before modifying the F-35’s armament bay, since the weapon will be useless without the right software package.

Well the Air Force wrote the spec when they decided that they didn’t want to take any non-stealth aircraft into a MEZ.

Im glad you think the 35 is the best thing since sliced bread. This is evidence if one thing where the 35 reigns supreme,,, spreading the government money around in the most effective manner to create loyalty base.

But the one thing it cannot do is laser designate its own target. It missed early 90s tech.

Then the USAF should fly it. That doesn’t explain why the Navy bought it. And the USAF made that requirement for procurement reasons alone.
The A-10 isn’t stealthy, how ever does it survive?

And this the same air force that built a wiccan chapel at the academy, says you can get promoted unless you celebrate faggotry, and said in congressional hearings that the B-1 is a proper replacement for the A-10? THAT air force?

If the bomb doesn`t fit,
you have to acquit.

By the time the F-35 is actually flying in numbers its cost will be well over $billion per copy

I think the point is, the F-35 is a joke, an over priced joke.

Stealth is a joke too, this F-35 is over priced garbage.

F-15 can do both. It’s a robust plane too. Technology is soon to put stealth to death. Might as well go for a tough proven platform.

You’re entitled to your opinion.

I’m so glad to see that posting facts generates many opinions, but little in the way of factual rebuttals.

The level of intellectual discourse here on FR is swirling the toilet...

And many FReepers poke fun at reality tv...it is but too laugh.

My opinion? I’ve served, my country is looking at buying this crap. It’s not opinion to call something exactly what it is. You want intelligent conversation? There are any number of airframes that can do the job. That’s not even the point.

Here is some opinion though. My opinion is you work or have worked on this F-35 debacle.

I suggest we remain focused on the real issues though, the complete takeover of government by very hostile forces.

But that’s not what the government asked for. They wanted stealth, and that is what Lockheed is trying to provide. What this article didn’t say was that the original spec didn’t include the internal carriage of eight weapons that hadn’t been designed yet.

I was at a machine shop/ welding shop getting some minor repairs done. The guy was machining some fancy piece of pipe/valve assembly out of some fancy material. (Older guy, loved to talk.)

It was a rush order for the Navy. He showed me the blueprint for it.

“Now the blueprint says 3.5 -inch. I’ve built two of these valves before and they were both 3 inch. And nothing on the ship is 3.5 inch. Stupid engineers. And of course I can’t get ahold of anybody, and they need it for shipping out on Monday. But - it MUST be a 3-inch.”

I’m not sure if he was ragging on the engineer or trying to convince himself. He seemed pretty sure of himself!

Well, saw something in a similar vein where someone insisted a 220VAC elevator had to be DC.
My father smiled and said something like, “okay.” and let them go to it.

You make my point exactly. I never suggested that the F-22 was interchangeable but I did say it is a good airplane. The fact that being a mudfighter is not the role of the F-22 is why I suggested the F-15SE could easily do the job of the 35... fly further, with two engines, with a bigger load... it is a dump truck.
