It was a judicial council, part of the UMC legal structure. It was due to a technicality of some sort. Part of the problem is that UMC liberals are experts at exploiting the system. Another complication is that there is no meaningful accountability for bishops.
It is the sin of placing the desires of man before the Word of God. Too many people want a god they can use, instead of the other way around. They expect a church that tells them that’s OK.
It’s the same with the concepts of Natural Law, that our rights come from God and not man. By erasing the notion that rights come from God, they replace them with “rights” conferred by the State. Such “rights” are not rights at all. In the end, its part of the process of denying that men have souls and recognizing the Rule of Higher Law.
Men without souls have no rights, and are pieces of meat to be disposed of as the state sees fit. Ask the “New Soviet Man” of 1955 how the previous 30 years of that worked for him.
It’s one thing to tolerate a person’s misbehavior in the hopes of changing them.
It is entirely another to validate this behavior by directly contravening everything the institution stands for.
Following the “ordination of women”, this was the next logical step in the path to apostasy.
And the world rejoices!
