St. Paul school board approves transgender policy

The St. Paul school board unanimously approved a new policy Tuesday that aims to make school more welcoming for transgender and gender-nonconforming students.

The policy sets the expectation that students' preferred name and pronoun be used at school and that teachers not separate students by gender without a compelling reason. It also will give transgender students access to the restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.

"I should be able to walk into a bathroom and not have people question if I'm supposed to be in there," Siren Lopez, a transgender teen girl, told the board.

Emma Santibanez, an 8-year-old transgender student at Wellstone Elementary, said she was outed as transgender during a summer camp. With the new policy, she said, "I feel safe again."

Critics, including the Minnesota Family Council, argue that the change in restroom access threatens the privacy and safety of all students.

You "should" be able to get the psychological help you need, in order not to act out (much less with surgical mutilation) a mental illness, young man. In a sane world, anyway....

Do 8 year olds ordinarily use words like OUTRAGED??

Im betting that was a “parent” inspired and scripted complaint!

Siren Lopez,? Did another lesbian couple choose that name for “their” son?

It isn’t hard to imagine what my parents would have said if I told them at any age that I was really a girl.

The 8 your old kid can be forgiven, she obviously has problems but the enabling parents need to be brought up on charges.

All this ‘gender I identify with B.S.’ is just another way to act out like teenagers have done forever.

An 8 year old transgender? I would love to see his/her parents.

An ‘8-year-old transgender’?

At that age they haven’t even shaken hands with life yet. Why is this not child abuse by the parents?

With the new policy, she said, "I feel safe again."

Well maybe you shouldn’t.

Just because the school board changes the rules to accommodate your mild insanity does not mean that your peers will compliant with those rules.

Children can be cruel and usually there will be particularly cruel one that knows how to abuse other children and stay under the radar.

You just know how they are, they must be so proud to be able to display their tolerance to everyone even if it means destroying a child's life. The Prius just wasn't getting their liberal piousness out like it used to now that everyone has them.

People are going to look at what kids my generation did to act out (drugs & alcohol) as a better time and make no mistake, drugs destroy lives too but you can stop doing drugs, what happens when this kid realizes he was in a phase and now hormones or, God forbid, surgery can't be backed out?

Where's CPS? A kid can't walk to the park by itself but this is OK? I remember something about a millstone for these people...

Do you remember any kids you went to school with who didn’t know what sex they were? Me neither. Apparently it is a new cultural phenomenon.

I was a tomboy. I played football, basketball, baseball with all the boys in the neighborhood. I built model cars with my brother. I went fishing with them and always thought boys had way more fun than girls. But I knew I was a girl and I even thought a couple of the boys were cute. I guess if a girl did all that now, they would make her use the boy’s restroom.

Let me guess, someone found him in the girls room standing while taking a leak... figures. This is a dumb question for most people, but there are these wonderful things called urinals in the boys restroom for people who stand while they pee.

The same as the number of kids with peanut allergies, autism and attention deficit disorder ... none.
And I went to school in two different towns.
