Why Are Tech Companies Laying Off Americans Doing the Jobs They Say They Need Immigrants to Fill?

RUSH: Investors.com is the source for the story that Obamacare premiums are jumping 23% this year, even after subsidies. "President Obama has talked a lot in recent months about how health care inflation has moderated in recent years, and he always manages to credit Obamacare for the result.

(SNIP)

CALLER: I wanted to mention that it's amazing right now that tens of thousands of STEM educated Americans, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, computer science folks and all this are being laid off by Microsoft, by different companies, and are having to retrain their --

RUSH: Ho, ho, ho, ho, hold on just a minute here. I'm confused because I have been under the impression that people like Microsoft and Facebook and Google have been asking for more H-1B visas so they can get more people immigrated to the country who are highly educated in math and technology and so forth, the STEM types, and you're telling me that they're laying them off?

No offence, I am sure you are not paying 10 an hour, but there are too many idiot recruiters out there low-balling people.

If I don’t know around what you are paying, I am not wasting my time filling out your application. Nobody’s dream job is writing line of business apps. Also, a lot of the possible talent that you are looking for, already has a startup going and is not interested right now in a 9-5 Corporate job.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today presented an amendment to the Gang of Eight immigration bill that would improve our nation’s legal immigration system by increasing high-skilled temporary worker visas, called H-1B visas, by 500 percent.

Scratch Ted Cruz from consideration for President. If he's that dumb that he doesn't know HIGH TECH people here in the US are losing their jobs to Foreigners that are exploiting the H1B process, then I sure as hell don't want him for President.

If they want their severance pay, they train their replacements.

SPOT ON. Seeing it happen at my employer today. Been going on for two years. Only a matter of time before they come for me.

Really ? Then why does every recruiter I talk to want to know what my current salary is? And then, why do they ask if there’s “any flexibility”?

OF COURSE there’s flexibility. Upwards. But IT salaries have been tanking, because companies prefer young kids, fresh out of college, with low salary expectations and dumb enough to accept deathmarch mode on a regular basis, and NOT for an emergency or crisis.

And the young kids may be energetic and tireless, we older IT guys and gals have experience, trained judgement, and real world knowledge of what actually works in practice, and what sounds good, but ends up as a nightmare to implement what turns out to be limited, if any, functionality....

Seems to me any job should have a dollar value assigned to it. If they are not getting the right candidates keep raising it until they do, it is not rocket science.

I understand that some companies will struggle to find the money to pay competitive salaries in this economy. The ObamaRinos and crony-fascists don’t make it easy to run a company these days. Money is tight, and sometimes there’s no quick way to fix that.

But companies that need to hire on the cheap need to be upfront about it, and they need to make all the non-money stuff as easy and attractive as possible. This is NOT a common skill in many big American HR departments. Many of them are chasing away the best candidates by treating them like desperate, interchangeable, disposable, piles of manure. If you treat candidates like manure, the usual and safe assumption is that you treat your employees like manure too. If you won’t post a salary range, the usual and safe assumption is that you’re paying low. If you treat candidates like manure, you’ll mainly attract manure candidates. Good candidates don’t want to be low-paid manure.

If your company actually treats employees (and candidates) well, STOP ACTING LIKE ALL THE COMPANIES THAT TREAT THEM LIKE MANURE.

Sorry for shouting... sometimes I get fed up.

Bear in mind I have 6 full time positions open which will take me months to fill.

Have you considered outsourcing your HR dept.?

The only poser we’re seeing here is the so called “hiring manager” posting on every immigration related thread on FreeRepublic.

Why not train people instead of import workers from elsewhere? If you were willing to hire kids from Community Colleges in North Carolina, and give them just a little bit of training, you’d erase your labor shortage overnight. The fact you haven’t done this already, and now you’re facing a deadline without the staff to handle it... That’s your problem. It’s bad planning on your part.

We don’t need to change the whole immigration system just because some numb nut in Charlotte can’t hire the people he wants ;-)

central_va: "I know how to handle twerps like you because I've ridden this merry go round for 30 years. If I NEED a job or have a current job determines how I approach dicks like you."

bolobaby: "You’re out of control. Please calm down."

Nothing you, bolobaby, have written here deserves the vomit gargle that has been spewed at you by this individual.

All one has to do is read what he writes to understand why he has had such an unfulfilling "alleged" 30-year career.

I say "alleged," because with an attitude like that I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he's been gainfully employed for possibly only 1/4 of that time.

He manifests an inflated sense of his own self-worth and apparently has insufficient talent to convince anyone other than himself to pay him more for what ever it is that he passes-off as his presumed "competence."

He thinks he's got you pegged, bolobaby.

What he doesn't know is that those who could have been his best possible employers probably took a pass on him early once they caught a whiff of the inward bile that he can't seem to hide -- even on an "anonymous" board like this.

FReegards!

Cruz doesn't support H1-B visas

LOL. That link is from his OWN Senate press release.

Cruz supports unregulated legal immigration and once supported the same "pathway to citizenship" that Rubio supported.

What’s wrong with LEGAL immigration?

Because it's not the immigration of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Where people from Europe got off the boat, didn't receive a dime in benefits, brought their skills, and helped build America to what it is today.

Ted Cruz wants more 3rd world dumpsters to come to America who'll suck off the teat of the American taxpayer and won't assimilate.

Unrestricted legal immigration is just as bad as illegal aliens sneaking over the border.

What language(s) are you looking for? Can you accommodate remote workers? I have vast experience and am looking about (although I’m only interested in the Posix side of the IT universe).

We’re a c# .net shop now - web development with some hefty backend components.

Posix is some esoteric stuff! Sorry that’s not our gig.

This started just after Obama made a Visit

Bullcrap. This had been going on long before Obama came into office and it will be as bad or worse under President Cruz or President Walker.
