Here’s where we’ll lose all doubt about Walker. He’ll do nothing to stop it.

AFAIK Amish have never been bugged about building codes. Not to use it as an excuse to have the state take over their land, anyway.

Similar situation here in NW PA... local municipality is strongarming an Amish family to hook up to the municipal sewer and they refuse because the setup will require that grid power be ran into the house for the effluent pump. Last I read, the property was seized to be sold at at a Sheriff's sale.

Tyranny.

Could be dirty tricks right out of the bag of dirty tricks off the shelf of dirty tricks straight from the Democrats dirty tricks pantry.

The target is Walker again.

I don't understand this statement.

“The Amish object to the new UDC requirements that require modern technology such as smoke alarms—a modern convenience expressly prohibited by their religion,” said the National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom, Eau Claire Chapter, in a Monday statement.

Anyone who has been around the Amish know that different groups of Amish follow different sets of rules set by their Bishops and church elders. It's difficult to get different groups of Amish to agree on anything.

Here in Iowa rural homes have always been exempt from building and zoning codes.

I did see that some Uniparty legislator was trying to bring that proud tradition to an end this session.

I need to check up on the status of that atrocity of a bill...

“in a statement. “Sand frac mines have already made generous offers on some Amish farms.”

And THAT is the whole all of wax.

Like so many Native American tribes before them - when found to have land valuable to the big boys -

“’It’s one of those things where the judge was emphatic that this doesn’t go against their religion, it’s about getting permits’”

Pardon me while I call BS.

The sheriff could slow-play it, or refuse. It is obvious what’s going on here - in the first place, how is the tyrant, er, judge so sure the doesn’t go against their religion? It very clearly does - the government knows it does, the government knows they are committed to their faith, and the government wants their land.

Plain as day. Someone ought to be shot.

“’County corporation counsel Heather Wolske said the rules are intended to ensure the dwelling’s safety.

‘What we’re requiring the defendants to do is file an application, and drawings, and permit fees to obtain a building permit so that a building inspector can go in the home and inspect it,’ Ms. Wolske told WEAU-TV.”

Who lives in the building?
Who owns the building?
Do you seriously think anyone believes you are more concerned about their safety than they are? Do you think anybody thinks you are AT ALL concerned about their safety?

Why should the comply with your decree, just so you can send someone into their home to “inspect” it?

INSPECT THIS! [o]

The law I think is quite clear in this case: 1st Amendment rights can only be overridden by a compelling state interest in public safety.

The classic case is yelling, "Fire!" in a crowded theater, which presents an immediate danger to safety.

Here, it is clear that smoke alarms do improve safety.

However, there is no immediate danger: every Amish member of the community has grown up without smoke alarms and there is no mention of the Amish dying in droves from house fires.

The attorneys for the Amish should file a request for an injunction in a Federal court and sue the county there.

This article makes very little sense to me. The family is already living in a home, why would they need to sign a building permit?

Are we to understand that they are getting kicked out of their home because there are no smoke detectors? Seems a bit over the top to me. While I do have smoke detector’s, I don’t agree that the government should be able to require them for your own home.

Is the permit an excuse for the inspectors to find something worse that they can use as an excuse for the eviction?

How much land goes with the home?

Local corruption suggested, led perhaps by a member of that township board. Democrat area in Ron Kinds district. Sounds like they have a parcel that some donor is interested in developing. Typical heavy handed democrat bureaucratic tactics. It isn’t the EPA it’s the local township zoning board that’s doing this.

Amish family facing eviction in Wisconsin for failing to follow building codes. (The first couple of comments are somehow making this Scott Walker’s fault.)
