Route as roughly interpreted by CNN. The proposed plan for a massive trans-Siberian highway would link Russia's eastern border with the U.S. state of Alaska.
London to New York City by car?
It could happen if the head of Russian Railways has his way.
According to a March 23 report in The Siberian Times, Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin has proposed a plan for a massive trans-Siberian highway that would link his country's eastern border with the U.S. state of Alaska, crossing a narrow stretch of the Bering Sea that separates Asia and North America.
The scheme was unveiled at a meeting of the Moscow-based Russian Academy of Science.
Dubbed the Trans-Eurasian Belt Development (TEPR), the project calls for a major roadway to be constructed alongside the existing Trans-Siberian Railway, along with a new train network and oil and gas pipelines.
"This is an inter-state, inter-civilization, project," the Siberian Times quoted Yakunin. "The project should be turned into a world 'future zone,' and it must be based on leading, not catching, technologies."

No. You can't drive there in the spring, summer or fall, either.
What's the difference between Rome and Nome? All roads lead to Rome, but no roads lead to Nome.

Dang you! (Beat me to it.)
Probably October-April.
I always thought this would have been a cool idea since the 1970’s.
I’m ready to fire up the Hyundai. B-)
‘The Russians dont have a paved highway from one side of their country to the other, IIRC. A Bering Sea bridge? Maybe, it would probably take 50 years.’
Not true. There is a system of paved freeways between European Russia and Pacific Coast (known as ‘East Coast’ there) in place right now. Most of it was in place for many decades, with the exception of some 400 miles strip not far from Lake Baikal which was finally built about a decade ago.
“lol.
I have it on pretty good information that when Russia builds highways, the concrete is thick enough to support heavy military equipment.”
So are our Interstates.
I don’t think they have a conception of the force of the ice on the pilings, they would have to scale up the bridge that Canada built at least 40x, it can be done, but it doesn’t seem like a viable project
You very obviously did not read the entire article. They wish to build oil and gas pipeline with the road. If they drop that and the highway Obama might fund high speed rail and commuter lanes for bikes and electric cars.
Oh yeah and they could agree to not station nukes along the highway if we find it for them.
“Going to have Howard Johnsons every few exits or so?
I know, dating myself.”
And Stuckey’s for candy and to stretch your legs. :-) Great memories of a wonderful time in a wonderful Country.
‘There been a proposed link up between Russia and Alaska since at least 1970... ‘
Say 1870s. Building a bridge between US and Russia is a lesser technological challenge than the English Channel tunnel and it is technically possible for a hundred years but the problem is enormous cost and no practical purpose. Would you haul snow between Siberia and Alaska or what?
Transsiberian highway is 10,000 km. It is forth the length of equator and between 10 days and two week drive.
Now imagine Transbering route (either car or train) between New York and London which is between two and three times as long.
I think there is more fun and easier just to swim across Atlantic (or take a plane or boat ride). Even a first class flight would be more economic, based on gas, fast food cost and motel fees alone.
“You obviously didnt read the article.” Yes. I did.
It would be preposterous to enter any kind of “agreement” like this with Russia.
Thanks for the straight dope, as my Dad used to say.
Invasion route.
With the Bering Sea, better to ferry across. The ice is feet thick in the winter and the storms are horrible given the wind funneling down the straits as well as the currents. Bridge is just not feasible, and would only be open May-September.
1) They are probably looking for someone to help fund it.
2) It will probably be spec’d to autobahn standards....able to handle massive tanks or their transport vehicles. Imagine a convoy of Russian tank transports going down the Jersey Turnpike on their way to D.C. on a “cultural mission.”
3) We have enough problems with open borders. We should already be tearing up about 50 miles of I 35 just to the north of the Mexican border. Imagine if 1/2 of central Asia just decided one day to drive all the way to the US. (In trucks, wagons, bicycles.)
Unfortunately the last piece, in Alaska, from Nome to Fairbanks, doesn’t exist, and there is NO WAY that the Sierra Club will let it get built. It’s more likely Russia finishes their work before any permits are granted in Alaska.
