The under secretary of the Army on Wednesday apologized for the militarys treatment of American service members exposed to chemical weapons in Iraq, and he announced new steps to provide medical support to those with lingering health effects and to recognize veterans who had been denied awards.
Under Secretary Brad R. Carson acknowledged that the military had not followed its own policies for caring for troops exposed to old and abandoned chemical munitions that had been scattered around Iraq, and he vowed improvement.
He also said that the Army had reversed a previous decision and approved a Purple Heart medal for a soldier burned by sulfur mustard agent, and that he expected more medals to be issued to other veterans after further review.
To me, the scandal is that we had protocols in place and the medical community knew what they were, and yet we failed in some cases to implement this across the theater, he said. That was a mistake, and I apologize for that. I apologize for past actions and am going to fix it going forward.
Mr. Carson was appointed last fall by Chuck Hagel, then the defense secretary, to lead a Pentagon working group to identify service members who had been exposed to chemical weapons and to offer them medical screening and other support. The effort was in response to an investigation in The New York Times that revealed that the military had secretly recovered thousands of old and often discarded chemical munitions in Iraq.

AND THESE CHEMICAL WEAPONS ( AKA WMD’s THAT DID NOT “Exist” as in “Bush lied” ) were used in this way:
The report found that insurgents had used some of the weapons in roadside bombs, that most of the episodes had never been publicly acknowledged and that many troops who had been wounded by the blister or nerve agents had received substandard medical care and had been denied military awards.
Yeah, I thought the libs told us there were no WMD’s and, of course, I believed them! /sarc
But there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The New York Times said so.
This is impossible because there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq.
Bush lied.
Interesting that this article is in the NYT. They probably are probably one of the Lib newspapers that claimed that WMDs in Iraq was a Bush lie.
Wonder if they or their readers are smart enough to connect the dots.
Well, as long as the Army said they’re sorry, that’s good enough for me.
So the NYT’s is printing this because.....1)Sadam had WMD or 2)Bush was prez and it was his fault?
This is NOT good enough for me.
Those Senators and Congressmen and demagogues who told us that Bush lied about Saddam Hussein’ WMD’s should be publicly SHAMED, TARRED and FEATHERED.
This is why we can’t trust liberals with foreign policy and security issues. The libs kept repeating the no WMDs in Iraq mantra for years. The weapons in Iraq aside, where the hell do they think Assad in Syria got his chemical weapons from? Stupid liberals.
An apology. How comforting. /s
I am still more pissed about the captured Iraqi documents that the Bush Administration took out of the public domain in response to Democrat complaints.
A young man I knew just died of brain cancer due to exposure to the WMD that didn’t exist in Iraq.
Oh...so he’s “going to fix it going forward,” is he?
Well, what about those who are broken ALREADY as a result of it?
These veterans are owed...and all of the words in the world will not heal them or recompense them.
They need action. They need the treatment. They need the compensation. They need the care.
STOP spending our treasure on aliens. Stop spending it on negotiating and cow-towing with our enemies.
God help us turn these misbegotten anti-American traitorous bastards out!
“. . .old and abandoned . . .”
Uh, ok.
RE: . . .old and abandoned . . .
Uh, ok.

Yep, abandoned, that is why Saddam kicked the weapons inspectors out and tried his darned best to cover it up.
He doesn’t plan to use them again, just like the Iranians do not plan to build a nuke today....
WMDs that don’t exist are hurting our troops. And it’s still Bush’s fault.
I’d have to wrap my head in duct tape to keep my skull from exploding if I had that many contradictory things in my brain.
The chemical weapons did not go to Seria and were used recently. Or am I confused? Whatever, it’s Bushes fault.
Bush’s..
It’s a scam - there are no chemical weapons in Iraq......
