As I write this blog, I realize that the event is more than three years away. But it’s going to be so huge that I thought I’d list some of the important details for our readership, the general public, and the media. Hey, it’s never too early for knowledge, right? Anyway, these are the facts.

1. This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 38 years. The last one occurred February 26, 1979. Unfortunately, not many people saw it because it clipped just five states in the Northwest and the weather for the most part was bleak. Before that one, you have to go back to March 7, 1970.

I saw the total solar eclipse from the Big Island on July 11, 1991. Spectacular!

I’ve seen three, hmm, four solar eclipses, including the 1979 one, one in my childhood (early 1960s), one during the 1980s, hmm (rustling sound), okay, I’ve seen more than four. I never look at the Sun, relying on either a camera obscura (including one my dad made just for us kids during that one in the early 1960s) or watching the “nervous” shadows of the trees’ leaves on the ground. Eclipses are cool, but brief. ;’) Even the more common annular eclipses are kind of neat. Frankly though, I’d rather witness another big bolide come through the atmosphere. I don’t expect to see another one in my lifetime. Thanks henkster, extra to APoD!

Pinging the list as a FYI..

Well ... you might want to start making plans -- it's about a year-and-a-half now. I hear some places have hotels booked up for that event, already!

I was there at that one in 1979, at Goldendale, Washington. And even though it was about 50% cloudy, I manage to drive to some holes in the clouds and saw it standing in a farmer's field!

I'm already thinking about this one, anywhere from Nebraska to Kentucky, depending on weather. It will be an event of a lifetime, so don't miss it!

Thanks for the ping!

“I was there at that one in 1979, at Goldendale, Washington. And even though it was about 50% cloudy, I manage to drive to some holes in the clouds and saw it standing in a farmer’s field!”

Beware! On August 21, 2017, the mighty OAARP (Obama Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) will have reached completion, is set to go off! At this future event, holes will be driven, punched, drilled, perforated, and chemtrailed into the clouds, and MILLIONS of them, perhaps even BILLIONS of them, will manifest themselves in farmers fields all across the nation!!! Run away! Run away, as fast as you can! NOBODY will be safe on this date that will FOREVER change the course of history!

God willing, I’d love to be able to get to see another Solar eclipse, particularly with it being in our own “backyard.” Besides the one in 1979, I was able to get to two Annulars – one in ‘84 in North Carolina & another in ‘94 from my driveway, literally. The centerline of the following Total in North America (2024) will actually pass a just a few miles south of where we live near Buffalo, but whether we’ll be able to see that is “in the stars”…

If I could make it to that one in 2045, it will go right over Tulsa. They can wheel me out in my wheelchair to see it, as I’ll be close to 100 at that time ... LOL ...

That one in 2045 would be the fourth one in the “lower-48” that I will have been able to see. But, I kinda don’t think I’ll make it to that one. And actually, I’m wondering if civilization will make it to that one ... :-) ...

Carly Simon:

...

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse, naturally, won
Then you flew your learjet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you’re where you should be all the time
And when you’re not, you’re with some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend,
Wife of a close friend, and

You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You’re so vain, you’re so vain
I’ll bet you think this song is about you
Don’t you?
Don’t you?

LOL, I’m not that far behind you age-wise, but under the current physical circumstances I doubt that 2045 will be an option :-(. Looking at the “crime scene” path map, at least the residents of SE Missouri/SW Illinois will have the good fortune of catching totality from the two consecutive eclipses over 7 years.

What I really need to do is to get hundreds of my astro slides finally scanned into digital format…

Just don’t go to Nova Scotia in 2017 ... you’ll miss the eclipse.

I am bookmarking that. Thanks. Any idea when the southern pass that’s NOT the 2078 event happens? It doesn’t have a date.

I noticed that, too, but I don’t know for sure. It has to be after 2045, though. Other than that, I’m not sure.
