How in the heck does a plane clip power lines coming into a runway? May have clipped them after it exited the runway in the skid.

Eddie Rickenbacker, the WWI Ace later founded Eastern Airlines. In the early days of commercial aviation, he was in a crash of an airliner. Electricians were wiring the airport lights and ran a power line across the runway.
He was one of the few survivors and was hospitalized for several months.

How in the heck does a plane clip power lines coming into a runway? The power lines are BELOW the level of the runway - they clipped the lines, impacted the end of runway slope, became airborne again and crashed on the runway.
