Greece is the biggest buttplug in the European alimentary canal, and their influence is up for grabs. They'll be courted by Israel (gas pipeline, common adversary in Turkey, any port in a storm x two), Turkey (already Greece' #1 trading partner I believe), Russia (the Greeks won't actually dance, but they'll use the tease of it as leverage against Europe; so far that hasn't worked), and even Saudi Arabia (gas pipeline, common adversary in Russia, ally of conveniece just as Turkey is).
The union and the euro are at stake, Greece warns EU

[snip] “The Hellenic Republic considers itself to be a proud member of the European Union and an irrevocable member of the eurozone... Yet the viability of that union, and especially of the common currency, is now in question, in the minds of many Greek citizens as it is in the minds of many among our European partners.” [/snip]
Excellent post, well argued.
When the Euro was being introduced, I used to ask how economies so different - Germany, Portugal, etc. could have a common equal currency. Well, now I have my answer. They can’t, unless they are willing to have drastic economic inequality.
