A North Charleston police officer was arrested on a murder charge and the FBI opened a civil rights investigation Tuesday after video surfaced of the lawman shooting eight times at 50-year-old Walter Scott as he ran away.

Scott died Saturday after Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, shot him in the back.

The video footage, which The Post and Courier obtained Tuesday from a source who asked to remain anonymous, shows the end of the confrontation between the two on

Now, explain to me why it would be a good shoot if the deceased had a discharged taser next to him and probes in his clothing, but wouldn’t be a good shoot if he just had taser probes in his clothing, and had taken the taser away but dropped it on the ground at the point where he was fighting with the officer?

b. You don't leave department property laying on the ground where you can't keep an eye on it and some bystander can walk off with it.

That depends. If the officer alleges the suspect took one of his weapons, then that should make it evidence and part of a crime scene. And should remain undisturbed and secured.

Looked smaller to me, like a pager or something. If the info about probes and wires is correct, it would have been a full-sized LE device, similar to what was on the ground at the point of the confrontation.

A police officer is allowed to shoot a fleeing felon if the perp is a continuing threat to society. In this case, the perp was not armed and deadly force was not justified.

There’s a far more likely reason for picking up the taser from the ground where it fell in the middle of the struggle and moving it up to where the rest of it was still stuck in Scott’s clothing than your assumed “planting”.

That's tampering with evidence...

Strawmen?

So tell me again what justifies shooting a man in the back as he runs away.

Just because the office was mad? That’s enough for you, apparently.

If the info about probes and wires is correct

What about that? Was it in this article? Maybe I missed it.

Yeah, if that’s what the officer believed and if there was someone to secure the scene. If he didn’t think it was material, he’d just collect it.

Bottom line is that if you’re going to plant a weapon to justify a shooting you plant one that could do actual harm from a distance, not a discharged taser.

There’s a reference to it in one of the newspaper stories. Apparently wires are visible trailing after him, and probes were in clothing.

I have no idea what the officer was thinking, or what he picked up etc.

My hunch is a copy of crime report and trial proceedings will be attached to his prison file.

Since the suspect can’t talk, I’d just like to hear the officers version of the event.

“b. You don’t leave department property laying on the ground where you can’t keep an eye on it and some bystander can walk off with it.”

Nonsense. As soon as the officer fired his weapon, the location became a crime/investigation scene. You don’t move evidence in a crime scene simply because you don’t want to leave department property on the ground. If you are worried that a bystander will walk off with it, then keep an eye on it (or have someone else do the same).

“Which is not to say that one couldn’t emerge upon further investigation.”

I think that that is a long shot. After further consideration, I think this officer is toast.
