A North Charleston police officer was arrested on a murder charge and the FBI opened a civil rights investigation Tuesday after video surfaced of the lawman shooting eight times at 50-year-old Walter Scott as he ran away.

Scott died Saturday after Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, shot him in the back.

The video footage, which The Post and Courier obtained Tuesday from a source who asked to remain anonymous, shows the end of the confrontation between the two on

Nope, you have already decided that the police are wrong, and that he is innocent.

Spend much time at crime scenes? Stuff that has no evidentiary value gets moved all the time. Moreover, all there is is an assumption that what he picked up was a taser. Coulda been the guy’s shoe, or wallet, whatever. More reason to wait for the facts to emerge rather than invent an evidence planting claim.

You are the one spinning like a top, trying to convince everyone that the cops were wrong to charge him with murder, after studying the video.

“Dead guy had cops taser I believe. A gun beats a taser most times.”

Especially when the dude with the taser is running away from the dude with the gun. Pretty hard to taser someone from 50 yards out while you’re running AND faced away from the person you’re trying to taser.

“Once again, we have video that shows only the outcome of the incident, not the provocation.”

Provocation matters not. It’s crystal clear from the video that the cop shot an unarmed, nonthreatening, fleeing person MULTIPLE times in the back at 50 yards. This is cold blooded murder by anyone’s definition.

Even morer when said Taser is dropped on ground 50 yards behind you.

I don’t know about that, but you can bet the rent this story/video gets real big. Not what law enforcement needed given the mood of the country.

Looks like a real bad shoot IMO, with good video. I would not want to be the officer involved.

Bottom line is that if you’re going to plant a weapon to justify a shooting you plant one that could do actual harm from a distance, not a discharged taser.

Thank you for your insight to police procedure

I’ll wait too, because that is how the process is supposed to work, but it looks pretty bad at the moment. One problem is that justification to use deadly force can turn on and off in split seconds. You can have it one moment, and a split second later it may no longer be present.

I want you to know that I understand what you are saying and I am not trying to enter into a debate. ;>)

I experienced more “shoot, don’t shoot” situations than I care to remember during my 3 decades of service as an LEO (now retired, thank God).

Again, based only on this video, it looks like this guy is toast....we shall see at the other end of this process. I could go on and on, but it’s more work than it’s worth to me.

Cheers....

Apropos of nothing, but just as a matter of filling in some blanks: The foot pursuit covered about a city block.

Got a look at Mr. Scott’s record. He had an assault and a possession of a bludgeon a few decades back, nothing recent involving violence. He had about ten fairly recent arrests for driving suspended, open container, contempt of court, and failure to pay child support... all small change.

The story is making lots of news on the west coast...Even local radio led the story not long ago.

One just knew with the widespread use of cell video, one of these was going to surface sooner or later.

Looks pretty bad.

This video above clearly depicts the officer dropping something right next to the suspect starting at 1:32 to 1:39. At 2:10 he seems to pickup an object.

This seems a bit odd.

Good explanations of why this officer was probably justified in the shooting: http://forums.officer.com/t199100/

You can see the taser laying at the cop's feet after the suspect takes off. Two seconds into the video =>

Watched the video. Didn't see it.

Guilty of Murder I!
