Does it ever occur to this community that you should actually cooperate with Police, instead of always fighting them? Police Officers are human beings, too, and surely would appreciate civil treatment.
I guess he thought so even though the wires and taser head were dragging behind the victim as he ran away (which can be seen in that 'suspect' bystander video), nothing in his hands while Scott drew aim.
A sober reflection of what was happening would have led to the conclusion that that was not the case -- however you don't have the luxury of Monday morning quarterbacking in the heat of the moment. Surely a monumental mistake, but not the execution that was first proclaimed (and which I bought into when I saw the first photos which did not show the taser wire sticking out of Slager's leg).
I got pulled over last night. Turns out my license plate light is burned out. I stopped, turned off my car, turned on the interior lights and stayed in the car.
I’m white the office was black. It ended up with a repair order and a shared laugh after I popped off a quick joke.
Perhaps the first shot or two can be explained that way. What about the remaining shots as Scott is fleeing? At that point if Slager thought he was in danger of being tased, he could have spent his time removing the barb from his leg and/or chest.
Here in NY, you get a ticket with a deferred fine for a busted headlight.
As long as you can prove that you had your headlight fixed within a day, you can send your ticket to the DMV with the auto mechanic shop’s repair receipt.
I know because I just had the problem a few months ago and was pulled over by a police officer.
I wonder why Walter Scott did that caused him to be tasered. What ever it is, it has to be more than a busted tail light.
I got pulled over one night in Texas for speeding. I had NY plates. I too turned on my interior lights and kept my hands on the top of the wheel during the entire stop.
BTW, those night time speed limits on the wide open interstate in Texas are rediculas.
Sorry I’m not buying it. Slager was just wrong. Your point about the taser is spot on.
“And this is where Scott all but shredded his only potential defense”.... I think he means Slager’s only potential defense”
Sorry, not buying the premise of this article; if you kill someone in anything other than verifiable self defense (or defense of your domicile) you should be put away for ever, or get Mr. happy needle. Period.
Did Slager set out to kill Scott? No. Did he, through is own actions and for whatever reason, gun down an unarmed man who posed no threat to his own life and safety, or the safety of any bystanders? Yes. Should he face murder charges because of it? Yes.
The only exception I can think of is a police sniper taking out a hostage holder.
The precipitating cause, whatever it was short of a want for murder or positive suspicion of impending murder, really doesn’t have a bearing here.
The operative question here is the 8 shots (5 hits) from a distance no one could possibly conclude is a distance of danger to the LEO. Furthermore, the shots were all in the back. What more do you need to know?
As would the people they are supposed to be serving and protecting.
Exactly, this ought not to be a national issue, but I'm a hypocrite so here is my two cents:
It seems in this day and age ‘civil treatment’ by a citizen to the LEO is the only option outside of anarchy.
For what it is worth, LE is NOT responsible to protect and serve. They are in existence to enforce the law only - ask the USSC about it. LE has no duty to ‘protect’ you.
We can clearly see that in this case if we look.
I think the only argument for shooting him in the back was if he was KNOWN to be armed and dangerous; the reasoning would be that he might take hostages or such.
What are the guidelines for dealing with someone resisting arrest? Are police officers supposed to use all means necessary to stop someone who is running away? What are the police told to do in these cases?
In all the cases that are being/have been made national causes, blacks resist and it appears, fight with or come at LEO.
